Set in the tranquil countryside just 200 meters from Majengo, along the C38 Ebusakami–Kima–Majengo Road, stands the Kidundu Friends Church, one of Vihiga County’s oldest Quaker landmarks and a symbol of enduring faith. The church, also known as Nemiilembe Church or the Vihiga Meeting House, was founded in 1905 — just three years after Quaker missionaries arrived in Kenya. Its sharp angular red façade and dignified simplicity capture both the spirit of the Friends Mission and the deep-rooted faith of the local community.

The church’s origins trace back to the early Quaker missionaries Arthur Chilson and Edgar Hole, who arrived in 1902 and made Kaimosi the first Quaker base in East Africa. From there, the mission expanded rapidly, with Kidundu Friends Church emerging as one of the earliest centers of worship, education, and community service. Beside the church stands an ancient fig tree, once used as a traditional shrine and meeting place, marking the seamless transition between indigenous spirituality and modern Christian faith. This natural landmark embodies the profound blending of old and new — a recurring theme in Vihiga’s cultural evolution.
For more than a century, Kidundu Friends Church has served as a beacon of hope and moral guidance for generations in Vihiga. Its legacy lies not only in its faith teachings but also in its contribution to education and social reform. The Friends Mission emphasized equality, simplicity, and communal worship, principles that resonated deeply with the Luhya people’s social structure. Unlike other missionary movements that sought to suppress local traditions, the Quakers adopted a more inclusive approach, fostering trust and respect among the communities they served.
Today, Kidundu Friends Church continues to stand as a testament to resilience, faith, and cultural dialogue. Its story is interwoven with Kenya’s broader narrative of religious transformation and the rise of community-led Christianity. Whether you’re a pilgrim, historian, or traveler, a visit to this century-old church offers a peaceful moment of reflection amid the rolling hills of Bunyore and Maragoli — a true harmony of heritage and hope.
