Maragoli Hills: A Splendour of Vihiga

Rising gracefully from the heart of Vihiga County, the Maragoli Hills, also known as Mungoma Hills, are among the most enchanting natural landmarks in Western Kenya. Easily accessible via the C38 Ebusakami–Kima Road, a scenic 20 km countryside drive connecting Luanda to Makutano, these majestic hills offer a tranquil escape into a world of rolling green hillocks, rocky ridges, and panoramic vistas. Together with their sister range, the Bunyore Hills, they form a striking topographical duo that defines the region’s landscape — with Maragoli Hills standing taller, rockier, and slightly less forested.

From various vantage points along the route, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Victoria shimmering in the distance, framed by the lush, mosaic farmlands of Vihiga. The area is laced with ancient footpaths and hiking trails, leading explorers through bucolic villages and serene countryside scenes. Hidden within these hills lies the legendary Mungoma Cave, a site steeped in myth and heritage, long revered by locals as a sacred place of cultural and spiritual significance. In his celebrated book “The Stone Hills of Maragoli,” Kenyan author Stanley Gazemba aptly described the Maragoli Hills as “one of the simple things of this area but also one of the most splendid” — a poetic homage to their natural grace.

Unfortunately, this splendor faces increasing threats from human encroachment. Expanding settlements and deforestation for timber and firewood have stripped parts of the once-wooded Maragoli Forest, leaving bare rocks exposed. The rapid population growth has brought environmental challenges, affecting local climate patterns and food security. Yet, despite these pressures, the Maragoli Hills remain a beacon of scenic beauty, a natural lookout point where visitors can soak in sweeping views that stretch across the greater Nyanza region.

For travelers seeking a blend of nature, culture, and tranquility, a trip to the Maragoli Hills promises an unforgettable experience. Whether it’s the serene morning mist, the echo of distant birds, or the poetic stillness that drapes the rocks at sunset, these hills embody the enduring charm of Vihiga’s highlands — simple, splendid, and soul-stirring.
