Kenya and Germany continue to build a strong partnership in the fields of peace support and security operations, with a focus on counter-improvised explosive devices (C-IED) training. On January 22, 2026, a high-level German delegation visited the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS) in Nairobi to engage in discussions about the progress of bilateral cooperation and the growing role of the school within the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). This partnership is a key element in enhancing Kenya’s peacekeeping and operational capabilities, particularly in addressing emerging security challenges in East Africa.
The meeting, hosted by Kenya’s Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, highlighted Germany’s significant contribution to the development of the Counter–Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Training Complex. The complex, inaugurated in April 2025, has already made a substantial impact by training a growing number of personnel from Kenya and the broader region. The collaboration aims to increase the capacity of local forces to neutralize and prevent explosive threats in peace support missions, which are critical in regions facing instability and conflict.
The German delegation, which included top security and defense officials, was briefed on the Humanitarian Peace Support School’s (HPSS) role within the broader African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). Special emphasis was placed on Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capabilities, with a tour of the C-IED Training Complex to see firsthand the cutting-edge facilities and training programs in place. This visit underscored the strategic importance of the ongoing cooperation between the two nations in addressing regional security concerns.
Both countries affirmed their commitment to strengthening peace and security efforts across the continent. As Kenya continues to play a vital role in regional peace support operations, the partnership with Germany will further enhance the country’s capacity to respond to security threats, not only in Kenya but across the wider East African region. The growing cooperation is set to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions, especially in regions impacted by terrorist activities and armed conflict.
The engagement at HPSS represents the strength of Kenya’s diplomatic ties with Germany, underscoring a shared interest in promoting stability, peace, and security in Africa. Both nations reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening international peace support frameworks and addressing security challenges through capacity-building and advanced training initiatives.
