The June 25 protests in Kenya turned deadly as eight people lost their lives and more than 400 were injured. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) confirmed these numbers following nationwide demonstrations marking the anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
Protest-Linked Deaths Spread Across Six Counties
KNCHR Vice Chairperson, Dr. Raymond Nyeris, stated that the fatalities were reported from six counties:
- Machakos (2 deaths)
- Makueni (2 deaths)
- Nakuru (1 death)
- Kiambu (1 death)
- Uasin Gishu (1 death)
- Nyandarua (1 death)
In total, eight people died in relation to the June 25 protests across Kenya.
Hundreds Injured and Dozens Detained
In addition to the fatalities, over 400 individuals sustained injuries, including:
- Protesters
- Police officers
- Journalists
While many have already been treated and released, 83 individuals required specialized medical attention due to the severity of their injuries.
Moreover, 61 people were arrested and detained in police stations across the country. The majority of these arrests took place in Nairobi County, where the protests were most intense.
Criminal Infiltration and Violence Reported
KNCHR raised concerns over criminal infiltration of the protests. The commission received credible reports that “hired goons” had joined the demonstrations in various cities, including:
- Eldoret
- Mombasa
- Nairobi
- Nakuru
- Nyeri
- Kajiado
- Kisumu
These groups were allegedly responsible for acts of violence, looting, and property destruction. According to KNCHR, this infiltration significantly escalated the chaos during the protests.
“These groups have engaged in violence, looting, and property destruction,” the commission stated.
Media Blackout Draws Condemnation
Another major concern was the media blackout imposed by the Communications Authority of Kenya. The authority ordered all media houses to stop live broadcasts of the protests. KNCHR strongly condemned this action, saying it violated the public’s right to access information.
“The Commission will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates on the promotion and protection of Human Rights in the country during this period,” KNCHR concluded.
