Early Wealth and Asset Disclosure

According to a 2012 public wealth disclosure, Singh’s declared assets were worth ₹10.73 crore (roughly $1.5 million USD at the time). Most of this was attributed to two apartments in upscale locations. By the time of his death at age 92, his net worth had grown to approximately $3 million, largely reflecting savings and property. A Scholar Turned Statesman

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Singh pursued economics at Punjab University, Cambridge, and later completed a doctorate at Oxford University. His thesis, India’s Export Performance, 1951–1960, reflected his lifelong commitment to data-driven policy.

Economic Reformer of Modern India

Singh’s economic career was deeply influential. Before entering politics, he held key positions such as:

  • Chief Economic Advisor (1972–1976)
  • Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982–1985)

His landmark moment came in 1991 as Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. With India facing a balance of payments crisis, Singh introduced liberalization reforms that ended the restrictive “License Raj” and opened India to foreign investment.

Prime Ministership and Policy Legacy

Serving as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, Singh led the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). His tenure was defined by:

  • 7.5% average GDP growth
  • Rural Employment Guarantee Act
  • Right to Education Act
  • 2008 US-India Civil Nuclear Deal

These policies enhanced both economic growth and social inclusion. Singh’s approach balanced market liberalization with social equity, helping millions rise out of poverty.

Leadership Style and Criticism

Despite his achievements, Singh was sometimes criticized for being “too soft-spoken” or “weak.” Much of this criticism stemmed from coalition politics and scandals involving junior ministers during his second term. Still, Singh’s quiet dignity and integrity earned him lasting respect across political lines.

Personal Life and Modest Lifestyle

Singh married Gursharan Kaur, and the couple had three daughters. He remained humble throughout his career, living modestly despite his powerful roles. His personal wealth was limited, especially in comparison to many other global leaders.

Final Years and National Mourning

After stepping down in 2014, Singh remained active in Indian politics as a Rajya Sabha member. He offered occasional commentary on economic policy and the nation’s direction.

Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, recognizing his immense contribution to India’s development.
