iPhone 17 Air to Be the Only Titanium Model, All Four to Feature 35W Charging

February 19, 2025 – Apple is set to introduce major design and material changes with the iPhone 17 series, including a shift in the use of titanium and aluminum frames and an upgrade to 35W wired charging across all models.

  • iPhone 17 Air: The Only Titanium Model
  • Other Models to Use Aluminum Instead of Titanium
  • Faster 35W Charging for All iPhone 17 Models

  • What to Expect from the iPhone 17 Series

iPhone 17 Air: The Only Titanium Model

Reports from Jeff Pu (GF Securities) indicate that the iPhone 17 Air—which replaces the Plus model—will feature a titanium frame instead of aluminum. This ultra-thin 5.5mm design necessitates a stronger material to prevent bending.

🔹 Titanium vs. Aluminum:

  • Titanium is stronger but heavier and more expensive.
  • Aluminum is lighter and eco-friendlier but less rigid.
  • Compromise? Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple might use a hybrid frame with a mix of titanium and aluminum to balance cost, weight, and strength.

Other Models to Use Aluminum Instead of Titanium

While previous Pro models featured titanium or stainless steel, the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max are rumored to switch to aluminum frames.

🔹 Possible reasons for the shift:
✅ Lower production costs
✅ More sustainable & eco-friendly (Apple aims for carbon-neutral products by 2030)
✅ Lighter design

However, some sources dispute this report, claiming that the Pro models may retain titanium.

Faster 35W Charging for All iPhone 17 Models

The iPhone 17 series is expected to feature 35W wired charging, a small but welcome improvement over the iPhone 16 series (which unofficially topped out at 30W).

🔹 Why does this matter?

  • iPhones charge slower than competitors.
  • Even Samsung and Google offer faster charging speeds (e.g., Galaxy S25 Ultra – 45W).
  • Apple remains conservative with battery tech, but even a modest 5W bump will reduce charging times.

Charging Speed Comparison (0% to full charge)

📌 Galaxy S25 Ultra – 45W, 72% in 15 min
📌 Pixel 9 Pro XL – 45W PD, 67% in 15 min
📌 iPhone 16 Pro Max – 30W, 46% in 15 min

What to Expect from the iPhone 17 Series

🔹 New materials – Titanium for iPhone 17 Air, aluminum for other models.
🔹 Visor-style camera design – iPhone 17 Air and Pro models get a new camera island.
🔹 35W charging – Small but meaningful speed increase.

Apple’s 2025 lineup appears to focus on design refinement, sustainability, and incremental hardware improvements, making the iPhone 17 series a compelling upgrade.
