The iTax online platform has eased the life of the taxpayers in meeting various tax-based responsibilities. How To File KRA Returns Online 2023. Filing KRA tax returns in iTax has become simple and easier. In Kenya, every registered taxpayer with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) obtained from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) must file tax returns every financial year. Those who have no business or are not in gainful employment must file nil KRA tax returns.

The iTax filing system is designed to accept the various type of KRA returns such as Income tax related to the resident individual, corporates, partnership and indirect tax such as VAT and Excise. Based on your tax obligation, you need to choose the right type of iTax returns and file.

In this article, we will discuss how to file KRA returns online or iTax filing.

How To File KRA Returns Online

1. Go to the KRA iTax website https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/

2. Log in to the iTax portal with your KRA PIN and password

3. Scroll to the navigation bar and select Returns. Scroll downwards and click on file returns.

4. A page containing the different types of taxes to be paid will be displayed. Select the right tax obligation applicable to you then click on next.

5. Your applicable tax form will open, based on the tax obligation you selected in the previous step.

6. The tax form displayed contains detailed instructions and will guide you through the filling process.

7. The page with instructions will open up with links to download the tax form in Excel and ODS format. Download the template and open it or save it on your device.

8. Correctly fill in the required information on the downloaded form and save the document.

9. Enable macros to validate and zip your file.

10. Go back to the iTax file returns page and select the period for which you are filing the tax returns.

11. Upload the file (zip file), agree on the terms and conditions.

12. Click on submit. A pop-up message will appear to confirm whether you want to upload the form. Click ok.

13. A message will be generated confirming whether your return has been successfully submitted.

How To File Nil Returns 2023

1. Go to the KRA iTax website https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/

2. Login using your KRA PIN and password. Correctly answer the security question that will be asked, then click log in.

3. Scroll to the navigation bar then select Returns. Different options will be displayed. Select the file nil returns option.

4. A tax obligation page will appear. Enter your KRA PIN. Click on Income tax resident. Click next to proceed.

5. Select the returns period then click on submit.

6. A successful submission message will pop up with an acknowledgement number.

7. Download and print the return acknowledgement receipt.

How To Pay KRA Penalties Via Mpesa

List Of KRA Penalties in Kenya

1. Failure to deduct PAYE, account for it, or to submit a certificate upon request.

Penalty – Whichever is greater than, 25% of the amount of the tax involved or Ksh. 10,000.

2. Failure to deduct or pay Withholding Tax.

Penalty – 10% of the amount of the tax involved, up to a maximum of Kshs. 1 million.

3. Failure to pay Stamp Duty.

Penalty – Additional 5% of the payable duty for every quarter, from the date of the Instrument.

4. failure to pay Excise Duty or VAT.

Penalty – whichever is greater than, 5% of the amount of the tax due or Ksh. 10,000.

5. Failure to pay tax on the due date.

Penalty – Additional 20% of the tax involved is charged.

6. Failure to file annual returns by the due date.

Penalty – Additional tax equal to 5% of the normal tax, or Ksh. 10,000.

7. KRA PIN-related offense.

Penalty – Ksh. 2,000 per offence.

How To Pay KRA Late Tax Returns penalty Through Mpesa 2023

1.Log into your KRA web portal account through this link https://itax.kra.go.ke/

2.Select payment registration under the payment drop-down menu

3. Fill the required details on the payment information page, submit and download the E-slip which will have a PRN ( Payment Registration Number )

4. You will use this PRN as your account number when making the payment using Mpesa. The PayBill number you will use is 572572

  • Go to your Mpesa Menu
  • Select Lipa na Mpesa
  • Select Paybill
  •  Enter 572572 as the business number
  • Enter the PRN as your account number
  • Enter the amount you want to pay
  • Enter your Mpesa pin and press OK
  • You will receive a transaction confirmation message from Mpesa.

You can, either way, use the downloaded E-slip as your deposit slip for Bank payments.
