Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART, is the backbone of public transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area. Whether you’re a daily commuter or a visitor, understanding how to buy BART tickets will make traveling smooth and stress-free. BART now uses Clipper Cards, a reloadable fare system that has replaced paper tickets. Once you have a card, you can tap to enter any station, making travel quick and convenient.

  • Steps to Buy BART Tickets
    • 1. Order a Clipper Card Online
    • 2. Buy a Card at a BART Station
    • 3. Load Your Card Online Anytime
    • 4. Reload Funds at a Vending Machine
    • 5. Take Advantage of Youth and Senior Discounts
    • 6. Use Your Card to Pay at Fare Gates
  • Tips

Steps to Buy BART Tickets

1. Order a Clipper Card Online

Visit ClipperCard.com to purchase your card for a one-time $3 fee. It will be mailed to you within 10 days. This is ideal if you’re planning ahead and not in a rush. While ordering, sign up for Autoload to automatically top up your balance when funds drop below $10—Clipper waives the $3 fee for users who activate this feature.

Note: Paper BART tickets are no longer available. Stations like Powell Street, Embarcadero, Downtown Berkeley, and others accept only Clipper Cards.

2. Buy a Card at a BART Station

If you’re already traveling, purchase a card directly from a Clipper vending machine located at every BART station. Pay the $3 fee and load funds immediately with cash, debit, or credit card. You can also get Clipper Cards at select retailers such as Walgreens or Whole Foods.

3. Load Your Card Online Anytime

Create an account on the Clipper website and register your card using its serial number. You can then add funds electronically via debit, credit, or bank transfer. You can store up to $300 at a time. While there’s no minimum balance requirement, you’ll need at least $2 to start a trip.

4. Reload Funds at a Vending Machine

If your balance runs low while you’re at a station, you can reload instantly at a vending machine. Insert your card, select an amount, and pay using your preferred method. Machines accept cash (up to $20) and cards, though some only take cash.

5. Take Advantage of Youth and Senior Discounts

BART offers discounted Clipper Cards for youth (ages 5–18) and seniors (65+). Youth cards give 50% off fares, while senior cards offer 62.5% off. Apply for these in person at BART stations or online. Children under 4 ride free.

6. Use Your Card to Pay at Fare Gates

When you reach the gate, simply tap your Clipper Card on the reader. The system will automatically deduct the correct fare and open the gate. Repeat this process when exiting the station. BART fares vary based on distance traveled—longer routes cost slightly more.

Tips

  • If you’re confused or face issues, ask a BART station agent for help.
  • Keep your card in a safe place—registered cards can be replaced if lost.
  • Check your balance regularly to avoid delays at the gate.

Knowing how to buy BART tickets via Clipper makes it easy to travel anywhere across the Bay Area without paper tickets or cash. Once you’re set up, a simple tap gets you moving in seconds.
