Galaxy Watch9 Classic Leak Points to Surprise Launch

Galaxy Watch9 Classic could be part of Samsung’s next smartwatch lineup after new code references surfaced in a recent Wear OS update, raising the possibility that Samsung may break its usual Classic model release pattern.

  • Galaxy Watch9 Classic appears in Wear OS code
  • Samsung may break its Classic release pattern
  • Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 may also be coming
  • Raise-to-talk may come to Galaxy Watch9
  • What this means for Samsung smartwatch users
  • Expected Galaxy Watch9 launch timeline
  • Bottom line

According to code findings reported by Android Authority, three possible Samsung smartwatch codenames have appeared inside Google’s Wear OS software: Fresh 9, Wise 9 and Project V2. These are believed to refer to the Galaxy Watch9, Galaxy Watch9 Classic and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, respectively.

If accurate, the discovery suggests Samsung may launch a Classic model for the second year in a row, something many watchers of the brand were not expecting.

Galaxy Watch9 Classic appears in Wear OS code

The strongest hint comes from the codename Wise 9. Samsung has previously used similar naming patterns for its Classic models. For example, the Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic reportedly carried the Fresh 8 and Wise 8 codenames, while the Galaxy Watch6 Classic was also associated with a Wise-style codename.

That makes Wise 9 an important clue. While it does not officially confirm the Galaxy Watch9 Classic, it strongly suggests that Samsung is at least preparing software support for a Classic-style model.

Fresh 9 is believed to refer to the standard Galaxy Watch9, while Project V2 is thought to point to the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. This would give Samsung three major wearable models for its next launch cycle.

Samsung may break its Classic release pattern

Samsung’s Classic smartwatch models have not appeared every year. The company introduced the Galaxy Watch4 Classic in 2021, skipped the Watch5 Classic, returned with the Watch6 Classic, skipped the Watch7 Classic and then brought the Classic model back again with the Watch8 series.

Based on that alternating pattern, many expected Samsung to skip a Galaxy Watch9 Classic this year. The new code findings now suggest that may not happen.

A back-to-back Classic release would be notable because the Classic line is popular among users who prefer a more traditional watch design and Samsung’s rotating bezel experience. The rotating bezel remains one of the most recognisable Galaxy Watch features and is often preferred by users who want physical control instead of relying only on touch gestures.

Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 may also be coming

The third codename, Project V2, is believed to refer to the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. Samsung’s Ultra model targets users who want a more rugged smartwatch with stronger durability, outdoor fitness features and a more premium design.

If Samsung launches the Galaxy Watch9, Galaxy Watch9 Classic and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 together, the company could be preparing one of its most complete wearable lineups yet.

The standard Watch9 would likely target mainstream smartwatch buyers. The Watch9 Classic would appeal to users who want a premium traditional design. The Ultra 2 would compete for fitness-focused and outdoor users who want a tougher smartwatch.

Raise-to-talk may come to Galaxy Watch9

The same code discovery may also hint at a new voice feature for Samsung watches. Android Authority reportedly found references to a new Wear OS setting called RttSettingsManager3pWearOs, alongside an existing Pixel Watch-related raise-to-talk setting.

Raise-to-talk allows users to activate voice assistance by raising the watch, without needing to say a wake phrase first. Until now, the feature has been closely associated with Google’s Pixel Watch.

The new third-party Wear OS reference suggests the feature could expand beyond Pixel Watch devices. Since Samsung is one of Google’s closest Wear OS partners, the Galaxy Watch9 series could be among the first non-Pixel devices to support it.

What this means for Samsung smartwatch users

For Samsung fans, the leak points to a more interesting smartwatch launch than expected. Instead of only a standard Watch9 and a possible Ultra refresh, buyers may also get a new Classic model.

That could be good news for users who skipped the Galaxy Watch8 Classic but still want a smartwatch with a rotating bezel and a more traditional wristwatch look. It could also help Samsung compete more aggressively against Apple Watch, Pixel Watch and premium fitness watches.

However, it is important to treat the information as a leak. The codenames were found in software, not in an official Samsung announcement. Device plans can change before launch, and codenames do not always translate directly into retail products.

Expected Galaxy Watch9 launch timeline

Samsung is expected to introduce its next smartwatch lineup around its next major Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy Watch9 series and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 could launch alongside Samsung’s next foldable phones, including the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8.

Reports currently point to a possible July event, but Samsung has not officially confirmed the full product lineup or launch date.

Until then, the leaked codenames give the clearest sign so far that the Galaxy Watch9 Classic may be real.

Bottom line

The Galaxy Watch9 Classic leak suggests Samsung may be preparing a surprise return for its Classic smartwatch design this year. The appearance of Fresh 9, Wise 9 and Project V2 in Wear OS code points to a possible three-model lineup made up of the Galaxy Watch9, Galaxy Watch9 Classic and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.

For now, the report remains unofficial. But if the leak is accurate, Samsung’s next smartwatch launch could be more exciting than expected, especially for fans of the Classic design and rotating bezel.
