This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to convert a foreign driving license to a Kenyan license. Foreign nationals (expats) are required to convert their driving license from their country of origin to a Kenyan one upon arriving in Kenya. Foreigners with international driving licenses can use their licenses in Kenya for up to 3 months.

    • (i) Alien Card Holder
    • (ii) Diplomatic Card Holder
    • (iii) Technical Staff – Category G (Gratis) Class
  • Procedure for Converting a Foreign Driving License to a Kenyan License

Eligibility for Conversion

The following individuals can convert their foreign driving licenses:

  • Alien card holders.
  • Diplomatic card holders.
  • Technical staff – Category G (Gratis) class.

Requirements and Charges by Category

(i) Alien Card Holder

Requirements:

ADVERTISEMENT
  1. Valid alien ID.
  2. Work permit/dependent pass.
  3. Driving license from a commonwealth country/international driving permit.
  4. Passport copy.
  5. Driving license confirmation letter from the embassy or agency responsible for issuing driving licenses in the country of origin.

Charges:

  • Kshs 1,050 – Conversion fee.
  • Kshs 3,050 – Smart driving license fee.

(ii) Diplomatic Card Holder

Requirements:

ADVERTISEMENT
  1. Diplomatic card.
  2. Approved Form 7 (MFA) downloaded from NTSA website.
  3. Driving license.
  4. Passport copy.
  5. Passport photo.

Charges:

  • Diplomatic privilege (no charge).

(iii) Technical Staff – Category G (Gratis) Class

These are staff granted exemptions for services in a country, providing voluntary services such as missionaries and Red Cross staff.

Requirements:

ADVERTISEMENT
  1. Passport copy.
  2. Letter of exemption from immigration.
  3. Valid driving license from any country.

Charges:

  • Kshs 1,000 (paid through the bank).

Procedure for Converting a Foreign Driving License to a Kenyan License

  1. Visit the NTSA Website:
    • Go to NTSA website.
  2. Access Online Services:
    • Navigate to the online services menu.
    • Click on “Driver Testing and Licensing”.
  3. Sign In:
    • Sign in using your e-Citizen credentials.
  4. Foreign Driving License Conversion:
    • Click on “Foreign Driving License Conversion”.
    • Upload all the required documents based on your category (Alien card holder, Diplomatic card holder, or Technical staff category).
  5. Payment:
    • Make payment for the conversion of the license as per your category:
      • Alien card holder: Kshs 1,050.
      • Smart driving license fee: Kshs 3,050.
      • Technical staff: Kshs 1,000.
  6. Submit Application:
    • Submit your application and wait for NTSA approval and an SMS notification.
  7. Apply for Smart Driving License:
    • After receiving approval, log in to your e-Citizen account.
    • Apply for a smart driving license.
    • Make payment for the smart driving license.
  8. Biometrics Enrollment:
    • Visit the preferred NTSA center or Huduma center for biometrics enrollment.
