DOGE Staffer Reinstated with Elevated Access Despite Controversial Posts

Elon Musk flashes his T-shirt that reads “DOGE” to the media as he walks on South Lawn of the White House, in Washington, on March 9, 2025.

A staffer at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), who had resigned amid uproar over past racist social media posts, has been quietly reinstated — this time with higher-level system access, according to newly unsealed court documents.

🔁 Marko Elez Returns to Government Role

Marko Elez, 25, had stepped down from his role in February after posts resurfaced urging the public to “Normalize Indian hate”, sparking widespread criticism. Yet, filings confirm that as of March 5, he resumed duties under DOGE, which operates under Elon Musk’s leadership.

The documents reveal Elez is now detailed to both the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the United States DOGE Service, where he was granted read-only access to:

  • The general ledger accounting system
  • The contract writing system at HHS

This access is reportedly part of DOGE’s mission to modernize government software and combat fraud and waste, in alignment with recent executive orders.

🗣️ Musk & Vance Defend the Reinstatement

In response to rising media attention, Elon Musk posted bluntly on X:

“He will be brought back.”

Vice President J.D. Vance, whose wife is of Indian descent, also weighed in:

“I obviously disagree with some of Elez’s posts, but I don’t think stupid social media activity should ruin a kid’s life.
We shouldn’t reward journalists who try to destroy people. Ever. So I say bring him back.”

Vance clarified that if Elez proves unfit for his job, he should be removed based on performance — not past tweets.

🧾 Access & Security Concerns

Although the Treasury Department previously noted Elez only had read-only permissions to key federal systems, internal reports contradicted this, claiming he had access to modify base code in payment platforms — a major national security concern.

According to current court filings:

“Mr. Elez has not modified, copied, or shared data with unauthorized users… and no pending requests exist to expand his access at HHS.”

🏛️ Political & Public Fallout

Critics argue the reinstatement sets a dangerous precedent and undermines trust in DOGE’s stated mission. Despite no comment yet from the White House, watchdog groups are demanding transparency around DOGE staffing and its handling of sensitive systems.

With DOGE being a high-profile agency under Elon Musk, every personnel decision is drawing intense scrutiny, especially with the 2025 federal reform agenda underway.

📌 Final Thoughts

The reinstatement of Marko Elez has once again raised questions about vetting standards, social media accountability, and political loyalty. While some frame this as a second-chance story, others view it as an example of tech-powered governance overriding accountability.

The public — and Congress — will likely be watching closely.
