The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is responsible for national policies and programs related to housing in the United States. Whether you have questions, need assistance, or want to file a complaint, there are several ways to contact HUD. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you reach out to HUD efficiently.

  • Method 1: Making General Inquiries
    • Step 1: Contact Your Local HUD Office for Immediate Assistance
    • Step 2: Get in Touch with the FHA Resource Center for Home Ownership Queries
    • Step 3: Contact Your Local Public Housing Agency (PHA)
    • Step 4: Write to the Head Office for Federal-Level Concerns
  • Method 2: Filing a Complaint
    • Step 1: Fill Out a Fair Housing Complaint Form
    • Step 2: Report a Bad Federal Housing Landlord
    • Step 3: File a Complaint About a Manufactured Home
    • Step 4: File a Complaint About a HUD Rental Program

Method 1: Making General Inquiries

Step 1: Contact Your Local HUD Office for Immediate Assistance

HUD is divided into 10 regions, each overseeing several field offices. To get immediate assistance, contact your local HUD field office by phone. You can find the contact information for the field offices by state on the HUD website. Visit HUD Local Offices for a complete listing.

A HUD employee will answer your questions or direct your call to the appropriate person who can assist you further.

Step 2: Get in Touch with the FHA Resource Center for Home Ownership Queries

For questions related to home ownership, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is the right place to contact. You can reach the FHA Resource Center by emailing [email protected] or calling 1-800-CALL-FHA (225-5342). The FHA can assist you with inquiries about:

  • Loan qualifications
  • FHA loans or down payment assistance
  • HUD homes
  • Mortgage credit guidelines
  • Property analysis

Step 3: Contact Your Local Public Housing Agency (PHA)

If you need information about HUD’s public housing programs, contact your local public housing agency (PHA). Visit the HUD website to find the PHA offices in your state and locate the one closest to you. Check PHA Contacts for the listings.

Step 4: Write to the Head Office for Federal-Level Concerns

For nationwide issues or concerns, you can write to the HUD head office in Washington, D.C. Address your letter to: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 451 7th Street S.W., Washington, DC 20410

This is ideal for broader concerns, such as policy suggestions or national housing issues. For specific housing problems, contact your local HUD office instead.

Method 2: Filing a Complaint

Step 1: Fill Out a Fair Housing Complaint Form

If you believe your rights under the Fair Housing Act have been violated, file an official complaint with HUD. This act protects against discrimination when renting, buying, or seeking housing financing. Visit the HUD website to complete the complaint form by entering your personal information and details of your complaint. Access the form at HUD Fair Housing Complaint.

Step 2: Report a Bad Federal Housing Landlord

If you live in government-subsidized housing and face issues with your landlord, call the Multifamily Housing Complaint Line at 1-800-MULTI-70 (800-685-8470) / TTY (800-432-2209). This line is for tenants reporting landlords who fail to provide safe and livable housing or exploit tenants for profit.

Step 3: File a Complaint About a Manufactured Home

For issues with a manufactured or mobile home that cannot be resolved with the seller or manufacturer, write a detailed complaint to HUD. Include your name, contact information, and relevant details about your manufactured home, such as the manufacturer, serial number, label number, and date of purchase. Mail your complaint to: Manufactured Housing and Standards Division Office of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs Department of Housing and Urban Development 451 7th St. SW, Room 9152 Washington, D.C. 20410-8000

For further questions, call HUD toll-free at 1-800-927-2891.

Step 4: File a Complaint About a HUD Rental Program

To report issues with HUD rental assistance programs, including public housing and housing choice vouchers, email your complaint to [email protected] or call toll-free at 1-800-955-2232.

By following these steps, you can effectively contact HUD for assistance, inquiries, or to file a complaint. This ensures you get the help and information you need regarding housing policies and programs.
