Changlimithang Stadium is the primary football venue in Thimphu, Bhutan. Located at an elevation of 2,300 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Stadium History and Development
Initially, Changlimithang Stadium had a grandstand with a 10,000-seat capacity in the west and a modest pavilion in the east. The stadium underwent its first major reconstruction between 2007-2008, to coincide with the 5th king’s coronation. This renovation saw the grandstand replaced by a 21-row structure, which expanded its capacity to 30,000. However, after the installation of seats in 2016, the seating capacity was reduced to 15,000.
Modern Upgrades and Usage
The stadium has been further upgraded over the years, including the addition of floodlights in 2011, sponsored by Tata, an Indian energy company. These floodlights allow for evening matches, making the stadium more versatile and accommodating to international events.
In addition to its role as the national football venue, Changlimithang Stadium is home to several local football clubs, including Druk Pol FC, Druk Star FC, Druk United FC, and Thimphu City FC. The stadium also hosts various international football games and domestic league matches, with a significant portion of Bhutan’s football league using it as their home ground.
