Functions Of IEBC In Kenya

Changing your voting location is a simple but time-sensitive process. If you have relocated for work, school or personal reasons, you may need to change voter polling station details with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The IEBC only allows voters to change voter polling station information during Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) or official revision periods. Therefore, understanding the correct process and timelines ensures you avoid last-minute complications before an election.

Why You May Need to Change Voter Polling Station

Many Kenyans move between counties due to employment, business or education. As a result, remaining registered in a distant polling station can make voting difficult.

Additionally, urban migration continues to reshape Kenya’s population patterns. Nairobi, Mombasa and emerging towns attract young voters. Consequently, transfer requests increase during CVR periods.

The IEBC recently reported thousands of voter transfers alongside new registrations. This trend reflects mobility within the country.

When You Can Change Voter Polling Station

You cannot change voter polling station details at any time. The IEBC announces official registration and revision windows before elections.

Continuous Voter Registration resumed on September 9. However, the commission excludes areas conducting by-elections. Therefore, always confirm whether your constituency is eligible before visiting a center.

If you miss the registration window, you must wait until the next official revision period.

Step 1: Confirm Your Current Registration Details

Before you change voter polling station information, verify your existing registration.

Visit the IEBC voter verification portal. Enter your national ID or passport number. The system will display:

  • Current polling station
  • Ward
  • Constituency
  • County

This step prevents errors and ensures you select the correct new location.

Step 2: Visit an IEBC Registration Centre

To change voter polling station details, you must appear in person.

You may visit:

  • Your current registration center, or
  • The IEBC constituency office near your new preferred polling station

Carry your original national ID card or valid Kenyan passport. The document must match your initial voter registration record.

The IEBC does not process transfers online. It also does not allow third parties to submit applications on your behalf.

Step 3: Complete the Transfer Application Form

At the IEBC office, request the Application to Transfer Registration form.

You will provide:

  • Full legal name
  • National ID number
  • Current polling station
  • Preferred new polling station
  • Reason for transfer

Common reasons include relocation, employment transfer, education or family movement.

Ensure you write clearly and confirm the spelling of your new polling station.

Step 4: IEBC Verification and Approval

An IEBC officer will verify your details in the voter register.

To change voter polling station successfully, you must meet eligibility requirements. Typically, you must have been registered in your current constituency for at least 90 days before requesting a transfer.

Once approved, the IEBC updates your record in its system. The change reflects in the official register used during elections.

Important Rules Every Voter Should Know

First, the process is completely free. The IEBC does not charge any fee to change voter polling station information.

Second, you must appear in person. The commission does not accept digital submissions, emails or agent applications.

Third, you can only make changes during official registration periods. Therefore, monitor IEBC announcements regularly.

Finally, always confirm your updated polling station after approval through the verification portal.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many voters wait until election season approaches. However, transfers close before the final register is published.

Additionally, some applicants forget to confirm whether they meet the 90-day requirement. This oversight can lead to rejection.

Furthermore, incorrect polling station names may delay processing. Therefore, double-check details before submission.

Why This Matters

Voting remains a constitutional right. If you fail to change voter polling station details after relocating, you may need to travel long distances to vote.

Given Kenya’s growing internal migration, voter transfers help maintain electoral participation. Moreover, accurate voter distribution strengthens electoral planning and resource allocation.

What Happens After Approval

After the IEBC updates your record, your new polling station becomes active in the next election.

Before election day, verify your details again online. This final check prevents confusion at the voting center.

If the IEBC announces further updates or new registration phases, you may still correct errors within the official window.
