Bugema University (BMU) is a private, co-educational higher learning institution in Uganda, affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Established in 1948, the university has grown into one of the most respected private institutions in East Africa, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. Its motto, “Excellence in Service,” reflects its mission to provide holistic education that blends academic excellence with spiritual and moral values.
The university is part of the global Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world’s second-largest Christian school network.
Location
Bugema University’s main campus sits on 640 acres of land in Kalagala Sub-County, Bamunanika County, Luweero District, in Uganda’s Central Region. It is located about 33 km northeast of Kampala along the Gayaza–Ziroobwe Road. The serene rural campus provides a peaceful environment for study and spiritual growth.

History
- 1948: Founded as Bugema Missionary Training School, training teachers and pastors.
- Later renamed Bugema Missionary College, then Bugema Adventist College.
- 1976: Received authorization to offer a Bachelor of Theology (BTh) degree.
- During Idi Amin’s regime (1977), the Seventh-day Adventist Church was banned, forcing temporary relocation to Nairobi and later to Watamu, Kenya.
- After the political changes, the college returned to Bugema and expanded into business and education curricula.
- 1994: Transformed into Bugema University.
- 1997: Officially licensed as a tertiary institution by Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports.
