Origins and Construction
When Fukuoka secured hosting rights for the 1995 Summer Universiade, city authorities decided to build their first fully football-specific stadium. The project was part of a wider development plan around Higashihirao Park, close to the airport and surrounded by other sports venues. The stadium, built at a cost of 10 billion yen, featured four separate stands, with the two larger sideline stands covered to protect spectators from the elements.
Completed in time for the Universiade football competition, the venue symbolized Fukuoka’s ambition to enhance its sports infrastructure and attract more large-scale events.
Development and Modern Features
In 2008, the stadium underwent upgrades to improve its functionality and spectator experience. A large video screen was installed at the expense of Avispa Fukuoka, reinforcing the club’s commitment to enhancing the matchday environment. The same year, a naming rights agreement came into effect, transforming Hakatanomori Football Stadium into Level-5 Stadium, a name retained until 2014 before later adopting the current title, Best Denki Stadium.
The facility is compact but efficient, with excellent sightlines thanks to its rectangular layout and football-first design. The proximity to Fukuoka Airport makes the stadium easily accessible for visitors.
Hosting Football and Other Sports
While Avispa Fukuoka is the main tenant, the stadium also supports a diverse group of users. A women’s football team, a rugby side and an American football club all play regular matches at the venue, reflecting its role as a multi-sport community hub.
Best Denki Stadium has also seen international action. The Japan national team played an official match here, adding prestige to a venue already recognized for hosting major university-level competition during the Universiade.
A Key Football Venue for Fukuoka
Today, Best Denki Stadium remains central to football culture in Kyushu. Its size, accessibility and football-specific layout make it ideal for both league competition and regional sporting events. As Avispa Fukuoka continues to grow its fanbase, the stadium remains a vital asset that anchors professional sports in the region.
