Apple users eager to unlock lossless audio and ultra-low latency playback on their $549 AirPods Max (USB-C version) will have to wait a little longer. A bug in iOS 18.4 has caused Apple to pause the release of firmware build 7E99, which was set to deliver the much-anticipated features.
What Was Supposed to Arrive
This firmware update was intended to finally bring 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio via Apple’s USB-C to 3.5mm cable — marking the first time uncompressed audio would be available on AirPods Max over a wired connection.
It also promised:
- Ultra-low latency for gaming and audio production
- Enhanced support for Personalized Spatial Audio
- A more responsive experience for pro users and creators using apps like Logic Pro
The Issue: iOS 18.4 Fails to Deliver
Despite the firmware being live on Apple’s backend, developer Aaron Peris discovered that iOS 18.4 fails to trigger the update for USB-C AirPods Max. Apple has since updated its support site, noting that the new features are “coming soon,” without providing a specific timeline.
⚠️ This bug only affects the new USB-C model. Older Lightning versions will not receive these new capabilities.
Why This Matters
The update was a crucial selling point for the USB-C AirPods Max, aiming to justify their premium price tag by finally aligning performance with professional audio expectations. For gamers, streamers, and audiophiles, the delay halts access to features that could significantly improve daily use.
Adding to the frustration is Apple’s opaque firmware update process, which lacks a manual update button — making delays harder to manage and track.
The Bottom Line
Until Apple patches iOS 18.4, AirPods Max USB-C users remain stuck without the promised features. If you’re holding out for lossless audio or studio-level latency, stay tuned — but for now, your headphones’ true potential is still locked away.
