Amazon’s Late Bid for TikTok Dismissed as Unlikely Amid Looming U.S. Ban

With the April 5 divestment deadline approaching, Amazon's surprise offer isn't seen as a serious contender

Amazon’s Late Bid for TikTok Dismissed as Unlikely Amid Looming U.S. Ban

With TikTok’s U.S. future hanging in the balance, Amazon has reportedly submitted a last-second bid to acquire the short-form video giant. The move comes just days before the April 5 deadline, after which ByteDance must divest TikTok or face a ban across the United States.

  • The Political Backdrop

The Legal Pressure

The legislation, signed last year, demands that TikTok be sold to a non-Chinese company over concerns about data privacy and alleged Chinese Communist Party influence. ByteDance must comply by this Saturday or risk being banned from operating in the U.S.

Amazon Steps In — But Too Late?

According to The New York Times, Amazon sent a letter to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to express its interest in acquiring TikTok. However, the report adds that the bid is not being taken seriously by involved parties.

Why? Amazon previously tried to imitate TikTok with its “Inspire” video feature, which failed and was recently removed. Critics view this latest move as more of a symbolic gesture than a legitimate acquisition effort.

Other Bidders in the Mix

  • Oracle, already TikTok’s U.S. cloud provider, is seen as a stronger contender.
  • Blackstone may join non-Chinese stakeholders like General Atlantic and Susquehanna International Group to present a formal bid.

The Political Backdrop

President Donald Trump is reportedly hosting a meeting in the Oval Office today to discuss TikTok’s fate. Notably, this situation echoes Trump’s first-term effort in 2020, when companies like Oracle, Walmart, and Microsoft attempted a similar takeover under pressure from the White House.

Trump’s executive order from January 20 — his first day back in office — delayed any Justice Department action on TikTok until April 5.

What Happens Next?

If ByteDance fails to secure a U.S.-approved buyer by the deadline, TikTok faces an outright ban. With Amazon’s offer being sidelined and other bids still in flux, the clock is ticking.

As the days count down, all eyes are on the White House and potential suitors — but Amazon, it seems, is unlikely to be TikTok’s future owner.
