A new Snapdragon 8 Elite variant could help Android manufacturers offer near-flagship performance without charging the increasingly high prices associated with premium smartphones.
Qualcomm is reportedly developing another version of its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile processor for release later in 2026. The unannounced chip carries the model number SM8850-1-AB, according to information shared by Chinese technology tipster Digital Chat Station.
The processor is expected to deliver Geekbench 6 results close to those of the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. However, Qualcomm may position it as a more affordable option for devices selling below 4,000 yuan, equivalent to roughly $590 at the exchange rate cited in the report.
Qualcomm has not announced the chip or confirmed its model number, specifications, pricing or launch schedule. Therefore, the details remain preliminary and could change before any commercial release.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Could Expand Into Cheaper Phones
The rumored processor appears designed for what the smartphone industry often calls affordable flagships or “flagship killers.” These devices typically combine a high-performance processor with selective compromises in cameras, materials, wireless charging or other premium features.
Using a less expensive Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 version could allow manufacturers to maintain strong gaming, artificial intelligence and general computing performance while reducing the cost of the phone.
That strategy could become more important as manufacturers face rising expenses for memory, displays, cameras and other components. A lower-cost processor would give brands another way to protect profit margins without shifting immediately to a slower midrange platform.
The reported price ceiling of 4,000 yuan also suggests that the chip may primarily target performance-oriented devices sold in China and other highly competitive Android markets. However, no smartphone makers have been linked definitively to the processor.
It is also unclear what Qualcomm might change to lower its cost. The company could adjust clock speeds, disable certain components, alter the CPU configuration or use a different performance profile.
Benchmark Performance May Remain Close
Digital Chat Station reportedly said the SM8850-1-AB produces Geekbench 6 scores similar to the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
Geekbench measures CPU performance through a set of single-core and multicore workloads. Similar results would suggest that Qualcomm intends to preserve much of the platform’s processing strength.
However, benchmark scores alone do not reveal the complete user experience. Sustained gaming performance, power consumption, heat management, graphics capability, camera processing and artificial intelligence workloads may differ even when CPU results appear close.
Phone manufacturers also determine how aggressively a processor runs through cooling systems, software tuning and power limits. Two devices using related chipsets can therefore produce noticeably different performance and battery results.
Qualcomm’s official Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform uses its third-generation Oryon CPU and includes upgrades to graphics, artificial intelligence and power efficiency. The company also confirms that the platform is available in multiple configurations, including versions with different CPU speeds and a seven-core option.
Qualcomm Already Offers Several Chip Configurations
The rumored SM8850-1-AB would reportedly become the fourth known Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 configuration.
The regular flagship version is identified in reports as SM8850-AC. Qualcomm also offers a seven-core configuration associated with the SM8850-5-AC designation.
Oppo uses a seven-core Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in its Find N6 foldable smartphone. The device has two prime CPU cores and five performance cores, according to Oppo’s official specifications.
Samsung also uses a customized “for Galaxy” version in devices from its Galaxy S26 generation. That configuration has been associated with the SM8850-1-AD model number and higher clock speeds than some standard versions, although Qualcomm does not publicly emphasize every internal part number in its consumer marketing.
Offering several configurations allows Qualcomm to serve different device designs with one broader chip family. Foldable phones may prioritize efficiency and thermal control, while gaming devices may favor sustained performance. Samsung’s customized version can support product differentiation within the Galaxy lineup.
The new reported version would extend that strategy into a lower price category.
Lower-Cost Chip Could Bridge Two Generations
Timing may be central to Qualcomm’s reported plan.
The company is expected to move its highest-end partners toward a newer Snapdragon generation, while the additional Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variant could continue serving less expensive performance phones.
That would give manufacturers an alternative to adopting the newest and potentially more costly flagship chip immediately. It could also prevent them from moving down to Qualcomm’s less powerful product tiers.
Qualcomm already sells the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 as a separate high-end platform below the Elite line. That chip uses an Oryon CPU and targets premium experiences while offering a different performance and cost profile.
The rumored SM8850-1-AB could create another layer between that platform and the full Snapdragon 8 Elite experience. However, its exact market position will remain unclear until Qualcomm discloses the specifications.
Competition Could Benefit Android Buyers
A cheaper Snapdragon 8 Elite processor could intensify competition among Android brands that specialize in high-performance phones at aggressive prices.
Manufacturers could use the chip to promote premium-level processing while competing on battery capacity, displays, cooling systems and charging speeds. The approach may appeal especially to gamers and other users who value speed more than luxury materials or advanced camera arrays.
The processor could also help Qualcomm defend its position against competing flagship and upper-premium chips from MediaTek and smartphone manufacturers developing more technology internally.
Still, the business impact will depend on component pricing and the number of brands that adopt the platform. A lower-cost chip offers limited benefit if device makers pair it with expensive hardware or restrict it to a small number of regional models.
The next details to watch include Qualcomm’s official branding, the processor’s CPU and GPU configuration, and the first smartphones selected to use it. Confirmation from manufacturers or benchmark listings tied to commercial devices would provide stronger evidence that the reported Snapdragon 8 Elite variant is moving toward launch.
