📍 Cupertino, CA — February 21, 2025 (NS News) Apple has once again made headlines with its push for self-sufficiency in chip development. Following the launch of the iPhone 16e yesterday, which debuted Apple’s first-ever self-developed 5G modem, a new report now claims that the upcoming iPhone 17 series will also feature Apple’s first in-house Wi-Fi chip, replacing Broadcom’s current components.
A Shift Toward Self-Reliance
This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on third-party suppliers. The information comes from Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple supply chain analyst, who suggests that Apple’s transition will significantly impact Broadcom and Qualcomm, both of which have long provided connectivity components for iPhones.
According to Kuo’s report, the iPhone 17 Air will feature both Apple’s proprietary Wi-Fi chip and the Apple C1 modem, which first appeared in the iPhone 16e. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will continue to use Qualcomm modems but will integrate Apple’s Wi-Fi chip.
Apple’s Long-Term Plan
Apple’s decision is not purely financial, though reducing reliance on external manufacturers could save the company billions in licensing fees over time. Kuo also states that the switch is designed to “enhance connectivity across Apple devices”, potentially improving seamless communication between iPhones, iPads, Macs, and future Apple AR/VR headsets.
What This Means for Consumers
The shift to an in-house Wi-Fi chip could bring improved efficiency, better power management, and optimized connectivity for Apple’s ecosystem. However, it remains unclear whether performance improvements will be immediately noticeable for end users or if Apple will reserve exclusive features for devices with its custom Wi-Fi technology.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup this fall, and more details about its connectivity advancements will likely emerge in the coming months.
