The Uganda Management Institute (UMI) is a public higher education institution and a national center for training, research, and consultancy in management and administration. It is among Uganda’s public universities and degree-awarding institutions, with a unique focus on professional and executive education in leadership, governance, and management.

History
- 1968: Founded as the Uganda Institute of Public Administration, primarily to train civil servants for leadership after independence.
- 1969 (Oct 7): Officially inaugurated.
- 1970s: Affiliated with Makerere University, offering postgraduate diplomas in Public Administration and Business Management.
- Mid-1980s: Introduced Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management.
- 1992: Enacted into autonomy by the Uganda Management Institute Statute, giving it agency status under a governing board.
- 1999: Expanded to offer a Master’s Degree in Management Studies alongside multiple postgraduate diplomas, certificate, and short professional courses.

As of 2014, UMI is organized into four main schools:

Regional & Outreach Centers
- Mbarara Centre (Western Uganda): Located at Kamukuzi in the District Administration Building; offers postgraduate diplomas and short courses using virtual learning technologies.
- Gulu Centre (Northern Uganda): Established in 2008.
- Mbale Centre (Eastern Uganda): Provides training to local government officials, civil servants, and private sector managers.
Role & Impact
- UMI plays a specialized role compared to Uganda’s traditional universities, as it focuses on executive education and professional development rather than broad academic disciplines.
- It provides training for government officials, civil servants, private sector managers, and NGO leaders, equipping them with modern management skills.
- Through its regional centers, UMI ensures that capacity building and governance training extend to all parts of the country.
