was originally founded in 2005 as a private, community-trust university but became a fully public institution in 2022 after a government directive and subsequent approval by Parliament.
The institution was created to serve rural communities, focusing on practical learning, field-based training, and community development. MMU emphasizes hands-on computer literacy, assessed fieldwork during the recess term, and flexible study options (weekend and evening programmes) to support working students.

- Main Campus: Kibundaire, Fort Portal City, Kabarole District – about 1 km northeast of Fort Portal’s central business district, and 294 km west of Kampala.
- New Campus: Under construction at Lake Saaka, 8 km northwest of Fort Portal.
- Coordinates: 0°39′33.0″N, 30°16′31.0″E (main campus).
History
- 29 March 2005: Officially licensed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE).
- 2007: The Austrian Service Abroad began supporting student and research exchange programmes.
- 2018: Following a presidential directive, MMU was earmarked (alongside Busoga University) for takeover as a public university.
- 1 June 2018: Received a university charter from UNCHE.
- 2018–2022: Managed by a Transition Task Force (TTF) appointed by the Ministry of Education to oversee its transformation into a public institution.
- 1 July 2022: Began full operations as a public university, with over 2,400 students and 265 approved staff positions (170 filled, 95 vacant).

Public University Transition
- September 2021: Parliament officially approved the government’s takeover.
- July 2022: MMU became one of Uganda’s recognized public universities, with government-sponsored students (150 scholarships in the first intake).
- MMU is expected to expand its academic and research capacities significantly under state funding.
