Tesla vehicles automatically power off when parked and exited, but there are manual options to turn off or power cycle if needed. Follow the steps below to turn off or reset your Tesla Model Y, 3, X, or S.
Turn Off Tesla Models
1. Tesla Model Y
- Put the car into Park:
- Shift into Park using the drive stalk located to the right of the steering wheel.
- Exit the car:
- Take your phone and key fob with you. The car will power down automatically.
- If you stay inside with the car in Park, it will power off after 15 minutes.
- Use the touchscreen for manual power off:
- Go to Controls > Safety & Security > Power Off on the touchscreen.
- Alternatively, press and hold the back button on the key fob for 3 seconds.
2. Tesla Model 3
- Put the car into Park:
- Press the button at the end of the drive stalk to park.
- Exit the car:
- Bring your authenticated phone or key fob with you. The car powers off automatically after 30 minutes in Park if you stay inside.
- Use the touchscreen for manual power off:
- Navigate to Controls > Safety > Power Off.
- Or hold the back button on the key fob for 3 seconds.
3. Tesla Model X
- Put the car into Park:
- Press the power button on the steering wheel with the brake pedal pressed.
- Exit the car:
- Ensure the car powers off by taking your phone and key fob with you.
- The car will shut down after 15 minutes in Park if you remain inside.
- Manual power off via touchscreen:
- Access Controls > E-Brake & Power Off > Power Off.
- Press and hold the back of the key fob for 3 seconds to power off.
4. Tesla Model S
- Put the car into Park:
- Use the drive stalk to shift into Park.
- Exit the car:
- Take your phone or key card with you to ensure the vehicle powers off.
- If you remain inside, it powers off after 30 minutes in Park.
- Use the touchscreen for manual power off:
- Navigate to Controls > Safety > Power Off.
- Hold the back button on the key fob for 3 seconds to turn it off manually.
How to Power Cycle a Tesla
If your Tesla displays unusual behavior or the screen is unresponsive, follow these steps:
- Turn off the car:
- Power it off manually using the instructions for your model above.
- Wait 2 minutes:
- Sit inside without interacting with the car (e.g., avoid touching the screen, doors, or brake pedal).
- Restart the car:
- Press the brake pedal or open a door to wake the car.
