Times U Sacco began in 1993 as Uruku Rural Sacco Society, serving just 200 members from the Uruku community. Times U Sacco started as a small rural cooperative managed by a single staff member, focused on mobilizing savings and providing accessible credit.
Over time, Times U Sacco expanded beyond its original boundaries. In 2004, it introduced FOSA services and opened membership to the wider Meru region. By 2009, the society rebranded to Times U Sacco Society Limited, reflecting its broader reach and growing membership base of over 10,000 members.
Times U Sacco Background and Expansion
Initially designed to serve a specific rural community, Times U Sacco evolved alongside Kenya’s cooperative transformation. Many rural SACCOs expanded their common bonds to increase capital strength and diversify risk.
Today, Times U Sacco brings together farmers, business owners, salaried employees and organized groups. This diversification strengthens deposit mobilization and loan sustainability.
The introduction of FOSA services in 2004 marked a turning point. It allowed the Sacco to provide quasi-banking services such as withdrawals, deposits and mobile access.

Times U Sacco in Kenya’s Rural Finance Model
Rural SACCOs remain critical pillars of Kenya’s cooperative movement. Unlike urban-based institutions, they often finance agriculture and small-scale trade.
Times U Sacco’s transformation from Uruku Rural Sacco reflects the broader decentralization of financial services in Kenya’s counties. As membership expanded, the Sacco strengthened its economic base.
Why This Matters
Financial inclusion in rural Kenya depends heavily on SACCO networks. Times U Sacco supports farmers and small entrepreneurs who may struggle to secure conventional bank credit.
Stable cooperative lending strengthens local economies and promotes savings discipline.
What Happens Next
Times U Sacco will likely continue expanding digital services and diversifying loan products. As fintech competition increases, mobile reliability and member trust will remain central.
Members should evaluate loan terms, dividend performance and digital accessibility when selecting cooperative services.
