  • Production and Background:
  • Reception and Controversy:
  • Music and Score:

Plot Summaries of the Vignettes:

  1. Ask Me Nicely:
    • Characters: Kate (Kelly Gichohi) and Faith.
    • Plot: Kate and Faith, two high school students, start a secret relationship. When Kate has a sexual encounter with a boy outside school, it causes conflict and ends their relationship.
  2. Run:
    • Characters: Patrick (Paul Ogola) and Kama.
    • Plot: Patrick, after visiting a local gay bar, faces a violent confrontation with his best friend Kama, who disapproves of his visit to the bar.
  3. Athman:
    • Characters: Ray, Athman, and Fiona.
    • Plot: Ray and Athman, long-time friends and farm workers, deal with feelings of jealousy and unrequited love after Athman shows interest in Fiona. Ray’s advances cause tension and eventually lead to his departure.
  4. Duet:
    • Characters: Jeff (Mugambi Nthiga) and Roman (Louis Brooke).
    • Plot: Jeff, a researcher, hires Roman as an escort. They bond over a conversation about race relations and eventually connect emotionally.
  5. Each Night I Dream:
    • Characters: Liz (Rose Njenga) and Achi.
    • Plot: Liz visualizes escape plans with her partner Achi as anti-gay legislation threatens their safety.

Production and Background:

  • Origins: The film was initiated as a documentation project by The Nest Collective, an arts collective based in Nairobi, Kenya. They recorded real-life interviews with LGBTIQ individuals across Kenya.
  • Funding: The project received financial support of $15,000 from Uhai/EASHRI, an East African sexual rights fund.
  • Filming: Shot over eight months using a single Canon DSLR video camera, maintaining a low profile due to the sensitive legal status of homosexuality in Kenya.
  • Anonymous Credits: Due to legal risks, the collective members remained anonymous in the film’s credits initially.

Reception and Controversy:

  • Critical Acclaim: The film garnered positive reviews for its intimate portrayal of Kenya’s LGBT community, praised for its humanistic approach and emotional depth.
  • Awards: Won a Jury Prize from the Teddy Award jury at the Berlin International Film Festival and ranked second in the Panorama Audience Award.
  • Controversy: The Kenya Film Classification Board banned the film, citing promotion of homosexuality against national values. Executive producer George Gachara faced legal repercussions but charges were later dropped.

Music and Score:

  • Composer: Jim Chuchu, also the film’s director, composed the original score and songs, released as a free download on Bandcamp.
  • Musical Contribution: The music enhanced the film’s narrative, reflecting its emotional and cultural nuances.

“Stories of Our Lives” stands as a significant cultural and cinematic work, shedding light on marginalized narratives within Kenya while challenging social norms and legal restrictions. Its impact extends beyond its storytelling, contributing to broader discussions on human rights and representation in film.
