You can send money from  Kenya to  Ethiopia on mobile using services like M-PESA Global (which connects to M-PESA Ethiopia and TeleBirr) and dedicated money transfer apps like Mukuru and WorldRemit.

Using M-PESA Global

This is a direct method allowing transfers between M-PESA wallets in both countries. The recipient in Ethiopia must have an active M-PESA or TeleBirr account.

Via the M-PESA App

  1. Open the M-PESA App and log in using your PIN.
  2. Navigate to the “Transact” or “Send and Request” section and select “Global” or “M-PESA Global”.
  3. Opt-in to the service if you haven’t already by accepting the terms and conditions.
  4. Select “Send Money Abroad” or a partner like Western Union, or simply choose the mobile money option for direct wallet transfer.
  5. Follow the prompts to enter the recipient’s details, including their full name and mobile money account number (active with TeleBirr or CBE Birr).
  6. Enter the amount in KES. The app will display the exchange rate and total cost upfront.
  7. Confirm the transaction with your PIN.

  4. Select the destination country (Ethiopia) and the appropriate receive method (e.g., mobile money).
  5. Enter the recipient’s details, amount, purpose of funds, and source of funds when prompted.
  6. Confirm the transaction details and enter your M-PESA PIN to complete the transfer.

Using Other Mobile Money Transfer Apps

Third-party services like Mukuru, WorldRemit, and Sendwave offer mobile apps that facilitate transfers from Kenya to various receive methods in Ethiopia, including mobile wallets and cash pickup locations.

  • Download the app of your chosen provider (e.g., Mukuru App, WorldRemit App).
  • Create an account and verify your identity.
  • Select Ethiopia as the receiving country and choose the receive method (e.g., Mobile Money).
  • Enter the recipient’s details, including their full name and active mobile number registered with TeleBirr or CBE Birr.
  • Pay for your transfer using a bank transfer, debit, or credit card.

Recipients typically receive funds in Ethiopian Birr (ETB). While many services do not charge the recipient a fee, local operators may charge a fee for cash withdrawal.
