You can send money from  Kenya to Burundi on mobile using services like M-PESA Global, Airtel Money, and dedicated money transfer apps like Mukuru and WorldRemit.

Using M-PESA Global

Safaricom’s M-PESA Global service enables direct mobile money transfers to Burundi. The recipient in Burundi receives the funds in Burundian Francs (BIF) in their local mobile money account, such as those operated by Ecocash (Lafarge) or Lumitel, which are the main operators there.

  4. Enter the recipient’s phone number and the amount in KES.
  5. Review the exchange rate and fees, then confirm the transaction with your M-PESA PIN.

Using Other Mobile Money Transfer Providers

Several third-party mobile money transfer operators offer services from Kenya to Burundi, allowing you to pay using various methods including your M-PESA wallet, bank transfer, or debit/credit card.

  • Mukuru: Offers cash pickup and potentially mobile wallet transfers in Burundi. You can create an order via their app or website.
  • WorldRemit: Provides instant transfers to mobile money accounts (e.g., Ecocash or Lumitel), bank accounts, or cash pickup locations in Burundi. You can use the WorldRemit App to initiate transfers.
  • Sendwave: Another app-based option for sending money, known for fast transfers.
  • Airtel Money: If you use Airtel Money in Kenya, you can send money to other Airtel Money wallets across the region, including Burundi. The app is also a convenient way to manage these transfers.

Recipients typically receive the funds in Burundian Francs (BIF). The best option depends on the recipient’s mobile network provider in Burundi and the fees and exchange rates offered by the different providers.
