How to Send Money Across Borders in East Africa

You can send money from Kenya to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on mobile using services like Mukuru, WorldRemit, and Airtel Money, and through M-PESA Global partners. Recipients can receive funds into their local mobile money accounts, such as MTN MoMo or via cash pickup.

Using M-PESA Global with Partners

You can use your M-PESA account to fund transfers through M-PESA’s international partners like Western Union, which offers transfers to bank accounts and cash pickup locations in the DRC.

Via the M-PESA App

  1. Open and log in to your M-PESA App.
  2. Navigate to the “Transact” section and select “Global”.
  3. Select a partner that serves the DRC, such as Western Union.
  4. Choose the option for cash pickup or bank transfer and enter the recipient’s details (full name as it appears on their ID document, phone number).
  5. Enter the amount in KES. The app will display the exchange rate and total cost.
  6. Confirm the transaction with your M-PESA PIN.
  7. Share the resulting Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) with the recipient so they can collect the cash in the DRC.

Via USSD (*334# or *840#)

Using Other Mobile Money Transfer Apps

Third-party apps facilitate direct transfers to mobile wallets and cash pickup locations in the DRC, often using a bank transfer or debit/credit card for payment from Kenya.

  • Mukuru: Offers instant cash collection at their Mukuru Orange Booths, branches, and trusted Payout Partners or directly to mobile wallets. You can download the Mukuru App to initiate transfers.
  • WorldRemit: Offers transfers to mobile money accounts (such as MTN MoMo), bank accounts, and cash pickup locations in the DRC. You can register and send money using the WorldRemit App.
  • Airtel Money: You can send money from your Airtel Money wallet in Kenya directly to a recipient in the DRC. Dial *185*1*4# and follow the prompts for international transfers.

Recipients in the DRC generally receive funds in United States Dollars (USD) or Congolese Francs (CDF) depending on the service and payout method.
