You can send money from Kenya to Burkina Faso on mobile through global money transfer apps like WorldRemit, Mukuru, and MoneyGram, as well as M-PESA Global via its partners. Direct mobile money wallet integration between M-PESA and local providers like Orange Money or Moov Money in Burkina Faso is not widely available, so transfers typically involve cash pickup or bank transfers.

Using M-PESA Global with Partners

You can use your M-PESA balance to fund transfers through M-PESA’s international partners, allowing the recipient to collect cash at a local agent location in Burkina Faso.

Via the M-PESA App

  1. Open the M-PESA App and log in using your PIN.
  2. Navigate to the “Transact” section and select “Global”.
  3. Select a partner that serves Burkina Faso, such as Western Union or MoneyGram.
  4. Choose the option for cash pickup and enter the recipient’s details (full name as it appears on their ID document, phone number).
  5. Enter the amount in KES. The app will display the exchange rate and total cost.
  6. Confirm the transaction with your M-PESA PIN.
  7. Share the resulting Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) with the recipient so they can collect the cash in Burkina Faso.

Via USSD (*334# or *840#)

  1. Dial *334# or *840# on your Safaricom line.
  2. Select “Send Money” or “Send Money Abroad”, then “M-PESA Global”.
  3. Choose a partner like Western Union or MoneyGram.
  4. Follow the prompts to enter the recipient’s information and transfer amount.
  5. Review and confirm the transaction details with your M-PESA PIN.

Using Dedicated Money Transfer Apps

Third-party apps offer a direct way to manage the entire transfer process, including paying via debit/credit card or bank transfer from Kenya.

  • Mukuru: Offers a reliable way to send money for cash collection or potentially mobile wallet deposits in Burkina Faso. You can download the Mukuru App to initiate a transfer.
  • MoneyGram: Facilitates transfers to thousands of cash pickup locations or directly to bank accounts in Burkina Faso. You can use the MoneyGram App to start a transfer.
  • Eversend: A financial super app that allows for sending and receiving money across Africa with competitive exchange rates. You can use the Eversend app to transfer funds to various African countries, potentially including Burkina Faso.

Recipients in Burkina Faso generally receive funds in West African CFA Francs (XOF). Comparing exchange rates and fees across different providers before sending is recommended.
