Safaricom to Introduce Time Billing Complementing MB/GB Bundles

Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunications provider, is introducing a new model for mobile data usage: time-based billing. This model will complement the existing MB/GB-based data bundles, providing Kenyan users with more flexibility in how they consume data. The initiative, known as the B Live System, is expected to cater to a wide range of user preferences, allowing customers to choose the plan that best fits their usage habits.

    • 5. Alignment with Global Trends

What is Time-Based Billing?
Under the new time-based system, users will be billed according to the duration of their online sessions rather than the amount of data consumed. This approach aims to offer a more tailored experience for heavy streamers and downloaders while maintaining an alternative for users who prefer the standard MB/GB-based system.

The Concept Behind Time Billing

The shift to time-based billing is intended to offer customers a different way of managing their mobile internet costs. While MB/GB bundles remain in place, Safaricom’s introduction of time-based options provides additional flexibility. According to Safaricom, customers have diverse usage patterns, and the new model allows them to choose a plan that fits their individual needs.

Unlike the traditional data bundle system, where users are charged based on how much data they consume, time billing will charge users based on the amount of time spent online. Whether users stream 2GB in an hour or just check emails, the cost will remain constant for that duration.

How Time Billing Will Work

This time-based model is quite similar to the dial-up internet systems of the past, where users were billed based on the connection time rather than data usage. For example, heavy streamers and downloaders who often consume large files will benefit, as they can download or stream without worrying about data caps. However, light users who check WhatsApp, send emails, or browse the web will still be charged based on time, even if they are not actively using the internet.

Key Advantages of Time-Based Billing

1. Simplified Billing for Users

One of the main advantages of the new system is its simplicity. Instead of tracking data usage in MBs or GBs, users only need to be aware of how much time they spend online. This makes it especially accessible for less tech-savvy individuals, as they no longer have to calculate data consumption.

2. Cost Efficiency for Heavy Users

For users who consume large amounts of data through streaming or downloading, the time-based system is a significant benefit. Since the cost is tied to time rather than data volume, heavy internet users can save money by avoiding additional charges for large file downloads or video streaming sessions.

3. Reduced Network Congestion

By promoting shorter, more efficient online sessions, time-based billing can help reduce network congestion during peak hours. As a result, Safaricom users may experience faster speeds and better service quality, particularly during high-demand periods.

4. Encourages Efficient Usage

The new model will likely encourage users to make more mindful decisions about when and how long they stay online. With time-based billing, customers may be more inclined to close idle apps or limit unnecessary online sessions, optimizing their data usage.

5. Alignment with Global Trends

Time-based billing is not a new concept globally. In some markets, such as satellite internet services, billing is based on connection time rather than data consumption. Safaricom’s move aligns with these global trends and provides users with more diverse options for data usage.

Current Data Plans Offered by Safaricom

Currently, Safaricom offers a range of data bundles to cater to various user needs:

  • Daily, Hourly, Weekly, and Monthly Plans: Starting from KES 5, with add-ons like SMS and WhatsApp access.
  • Monthly Data Bundles: Ranging between 25GB–40GB, priced at KES 3,000.
  • 5G Mobile Bundles: Between 15GB–200GB, priced between KES 1,000 and KES 10,000.
  • Home Wi-Fi Packages: Offering capped plans (400GB–1.5TB) and unlimited speed-based plans (10Mbps–250Mbps), priced between KES 2,999 and KES 10,000.

Why This Matters for Kenyan Consumers

The introduction of time-based billing will have a significant impact on Safaricom’s customers. It provides more flexibility for heavy users while offering an alternative to those who prefer traditional MB/GB plans. However, for light users, it might result in higher costs if they are not mindful of idle time or usage during off-peak hours.

Additionally, this new offering reflects Safaricom’s efforts to manage network congestion and ensure a smoother internet experience for all users, especially as the demand for mobile data continues to increase across Kenya.

Conclusion:

With the launch of time-based billing, Safaricom is once again demonstrating its commitment to innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of its users. Whether you’re a heavy downloader or a casual browser, this new model is designed to enhance the overall user experience while optimizing network resources. As the company continues to expand its offerings, customers will have more choices to tailor their data plans, making it easier to stay connected and in control of their digital lives.
