Introduction to Safaricom Ethiopia

Safaricom Ethiopia is a landmark expansion by Kenya’s leading telecommunications company, Safaricom, into Ethiopia’s growing telecom market. It marks the company’s first venture outside Kenya, targeting one of Africa’s largest and most underdeveloped telecom markets.

Key Milestones and Entry into Ethiopia

  • Market Entry:
In May 2021, Safaricom, as part of a consortium including Vodafone and Vodacom, secured the license to operate in Ethiopia. This followed the Ethiopian government’s decision to end Ethio Telecom’s monopoly by liberalizing the sector.
  • Investment Commitment:
The consortium pledged over $8 billion for infrastructure and service development over the next decade. This includes the introduction of 4G and 5G networks.

Infrastructure and Network Development

  1. Network Expansion:
Safaricom Ethiopia now has 2,242 base stations, covering 33 cities, and providing services to 33% of Ethiopia’s population.
    • Plans for FY 2024 include an investment of between Sh40 billion to Sh45 billion to enhance coverage and service quality.
  2. Local Manufacturing:
To reduce costs and improve deployment speed, Safaricom Ethiopia collaborates with Ethiopian manufacturers, such as Woda Metal PLC, for telecom towers.

Services and Innovations

  1. Core Services:
    • Voice calls, SMS, and mobile data with competitive pricing and reliable service.
    • Rapid deployment of 5G technology, catering to increasing demand for high-speed internet.
  2. Mobile Money – M-Pesa:
    • M-Pesa launched in Ethiopia and is driving financial inclusion.
    • Integration with nine Ethiopian banks has expanded M-Pesa’s functionality, enabling seamless transactions between bank accounts and M-Pesa wallets.
    • Active M-Pesa merchants rose from 12,400 to 43,100 within three months (Sept–Dec 2023).
  3. Digital Services:
    • Plans to introduce mobile health, e-commerce, and education platforms, leveraging its advanced telecom infrastructure.

Revenue Highlights

  • By December 2023, Safaricom Ethiopia achieved notable growth:
    • M-Pesa Users: Grew from 1.2 million to 3.1 million in three months.
    • M-Pesa Transaction Value: Increased from Sh3 billion to Sh18.5 billion during the same period.
  • Half-Year Financial Performance (2024):
    • Mobile Data: KShs 1,364.4 million
    • Voice Services: KShs 424 million
    • M-Pesa Revenue: KShs 7.2 million

Strategic Partnerships and Technological Advancements

  1. M-Pesa Interoperability:
M-Pesa works with Ethiopian banks to simplify financial transactions and drive merchant growth.
  2. 5G Technology:
Increasing adoption of 5G-enabled devices highlights growing demand for faster internet.

Future Prospects

Safaricom Ethiopia is poised to transform Ethiopia’s telecom and digital landscape with:
