Airtel Kopa Credo Lets Kenyans Borrow Airtime and Data

Airtel Kopa Credo allows eligible prepaid customers in Kenya to borrow airtime or selected voice and data bundles when they do not have enough credit to complete a purchase.

Customers can access the service through Airtel’s USSD menu by dialing *544#, according to the operator’s current Kopa Credo information page. The borrowed amount is recovered when the subscriber next recharges their line.

Airtel charges a service fee equal to 10% of the airtime or bundle value. Customers must clear the full outstanding balance before becoming eligible for another advance.

How Airtel Kopa Credo works

Kopa Credo is available to registered Airtel prepaid subscribers who meet the operator’s internal eligibility requirements.

After dialing *544#, a customer can view the airtime or bundle advances available for their number. The amount offered may vary according to factors such as recharge history, service usage and previous repayments.

Customers can use advanced airtime to:

• Make calls to Airtel and other Kenyan networks
• Send local text messages
• Purchase eligible Airtel bundles
• Access other supported prepaid services

Airtel also allows qualifying customers to borrow selected data and voice bundles directly rather than first receiving airtime and using it to buy a package.

The borrowed amount and applicable fee are deducted automatically from subsequent airtime recharges until the debt is fully recovered.

Airtel states that it may collect the amount in one payment or through several deductions if a recharge is not sufficient to cover the full balance.

Kopa Credo airtime charges

The service provides airtime advances ranging from KSh10 to KSh150 under the published tariff.

Instead of adding the fee to the repayment amount, Airtel deducts it from the airtime delivered to the customer. A subscriber requesting KSh100, for example, receives KSh90 in usable airtime but repays KSh100.

The structure means the service fee represents 10% of the requested advance.

Customers should check the amount displayed in the USSD confirmation screen before accepting an advance because Airtel reserves the right to revise its charges and available limits.

Customers can borrow voice bundles

Kopa Credo also covers selected Tubonge voice packages.

The published options include daily, 48-hour and weekly bundles offering combinations of Airtel-to-Airtel minutes, all-network minutes and text messages.

Unlike an airtime advance, the bundle fee is added to the package price. A KSh80 bundle therefore results in a total recovery amount of KSh88.

Kopa Credo data bundle options

Airtel subscribers can also borrow selected short-term and weekly data packages.

The available bundles range from a one-hour 1GB package to daily and weekly offers that include WhatsApp access.

Airtel’s separate Kopa Data page says customers can borrow internet bundles when they have run out of both data and airtime, with repayment collected from a later recharge.

The operator states on that page that borrowed data should be repaid within 72 hours. Customers should confirm the exact repayment terms presented when subscribing because conditions may differ between products.

Unliminet packages are also included

The published Kopa Credo menu includes Unliminet bundles combining data, calling minutes and SMS.

The actual packages shown to an individual customer may depend on availability and eligibility at the time of the request.

Who qualifies for Airtel Kopa Credo?

Customers must have a registered and active Airtel prepaid line.

Airtel’s terms state that suspended or deactivated subscribers are not eligible. Customers who have reached their approved borrowing limit must repay the outstanding amount before receiving another advance.

Eligibility is assessed using information connected to the customer’s use of Airtel services. The operator says it may store and analyze such information to determine eligibility, recover outstanding advances and conduct market research.

An older Airtel service page states that customers must have recharged at least KSh10 during the preceding 90 days. However, the amount offered remains subject to Airtel’s assessment and may not be identical for every subscriber.

Advances cannot be cancelled

A customer cannot reverse an airtime or bundle advance after confirming the request.

Airtel may deduct money from later airtime recharges without requesting separate approval each time until the outstanding amount is cleared.

This can affect customers who top up specifically to make an urgent call or buy another package. If an outstanding Kopa Credo balance exists, some or all of the recharge may first be used for repayment.

Subscribers should therefore check their debt balance before purchasing new airtime.

Airtel lists two access codes on its website

Airtel’s dedicated Kopa Credo page currently directs customers to *544#, which is also widely used for accessing its voice and data bundle menus.

However, another Airtel Kenya page still refers to *310# as the Kopa Credo access code.

The difference may reflect older service instructions or alternative USSD access routes. Customers should use *544# based on the dedicated product page and follow the options displayed on their phones.

Convenient credit comes at a cost

Kopa Credo can help customers remain connected when they unexpectedly run out of airtime or mobile data.

The convenience carries a 10% service charge, however, and future recharges are automatically reduced to settle the debt.

Customers should review the usable airtime, service fee and total repayment shown before confirming. The service is most useful for short-term connectivity needs rather than as a routine replacement for purchasing airtime or bundles in advance.

Airtel may revise the available packages, borrowing limits and service charges, making the USSD confirmation screen and the operator’s current terms the most reliable sources for the final cost of each advance.
