How to Reverse M-Pesa Transactions Sent to the Wrong Number

Accidentally sending money to the wrong M-Pesa number can be frustrating, but Safaricom has made it easier to reverse the transaction. The key is to act quickly. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you recover your funds:

  • Step-by-Step Process:
  • What Else You Should Know About Reversing M-Pesa Money:
  • Important Tips:

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Check Your M-Pesa Message Inbox
After making the transaction, locate the confirmation message you received from M-Pesa.
  2. Forward the Transaction Message to 456
    • Open the message and tap “Forward.”
    • Enter 456 as the recipient, then send the message exactly as it is without editing.
  3. Wait for Safaricom’s Response
You’ll receive a confirmation message from Safaricom acknowledging that your request has been received.
  4. Safaricom Will Begin the Reversal Process
    • If the recipient has not yet used the money, the reversal process will be successful, and you’ll receive the money back within minutes to a few hours.
    • Stay available on your phone as Safaricom may contact you for further verification during the process.

What Else You Should Know About Reversing M-Pesa Money:

  • Act Quickly: The sooner you report the mistake, the better your chances of recovering the money. It’s best to act within 5-10 minutes.
  • Avoid Calling the Wrong Recipient: If you realize the mistake, refrain from contacting the person directly. They could withdraw the money immediately after noticing it was an error.
  • Do Not Send Money Again Until Reversal is Complete: Sending another transaction can create confusion and might cause you to repeat the same mistake.
  • Use the Hakikisha Prompt: Always double-check the recipient’s name before confirming any transaction. Safaricom offers this prompt to help prevent errors before sending money.

Important Tips:

  • Safaricom’s reversal service is free, but its success depends on the timing of your report.
  • In rare cases, if the money has been withdrawn or used by the wrong recipient, Safaricom may not be able to recover it. However, if the funds are still intact, the reversal process is usually successful.

By following these simple steps, you can quickly fix the error and recover your funds! Always be cautious when using M-Pesa to avoid mistakes and unnecessary stress.
