Paul Russo, born around 1976, is a distinguished Kenyan human resources management professional, businessman, and corporate executive. As of 25 May 2022, he serves as the Group CEO of Kenya Commercial Bank Group (KCB Group), one of the largest financial services organizations in Africa. Prior to this role, Russo was the managing director and CEO of the National Bank of Kenya (NBK), a subsidiary of KCB Bank Kenya, which was acquired in 2019.
Background and Education Russo’s roots trace back to Laisamis, in Marsabit County, northern Kenya. His academic journey began in his hometown and later led him to Mang’u High School in Thika, Kiambu County, where he attended on a scholarship from the Catholic Church. He pursued higher education at Moi University in Eldoret, earning a Bachelor of Business Management (BBM), followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Strathmore University in Nairobi. Additionally, Russo holds a senior executive certification for Africa from Harvard Business School and a Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management from the Kenya Institute of Human Resources.
Career Russo’s career began in 2000 in the human resources department at Kenya Breweries Limited. He then moved on to roles at Barclays Bank of Kenya (now Absa Bank Kenya), K-Rep Bank (now Sidian Bank), and PwC Kenya. In 2008, he joined Barclays Africa Group (now Absa Group Limited) as head of human resources across three divisions. In 2014, Russo joined KCB Bank Group as the Group Human Resources Director, a position he held until 2019 when he was promoted to Group Regional Businesses Director, overseeing nine subsidiaries within the group.
In 2019, following the acquisition of National Bank of Kenya, Russo was appointed managing director and CEO of NBK. His leadership at NBK was part of a strategic consolidation plan within the KCB Group. In 2022, Russo succeeded Joshua Oigara as the Group CEO of KCB Group, taking over the helm to continue the legacy of robust growth and regional expansion. Oigara stayed on for a period to assist in the transition, ensuring a smooth handover.
