Dr. Benson I. Wairegi, born in 1953, is a seasoned Kenyan accountant and business executive renowned for his role as the Group Managing Director of Britam Holdings Plc, a leading financial services conglomerate based in Nairobi. With his guidance, Britam has expanded from a modest home service insurance company to a robust financial services group with operations across seven African countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Mozambique, and Malawi. The company’s portfolio includes life insurance, general insurance, health insurance, retirement planning, and property.
Career Journey Dr. Wairegi’s professional journey began in 1977 at the young age of 24 when he joined PriceWaterHouseCoopers as an audit trainee. His trajectory took a significant turn in 1980 when he moved to British-American as the Chief Accountant. His pivotal moment came in 1984, a time of significant regulatory changes in Kenya. That year, Kenyan regulators mandated that all foreign-owned insurance companies divest at least 33.3% of their shareholding to Kenyan nationals. Seizing the opportunity, Dr. Wairegi took a bold step by securing a KSh600,000 personal mortgage against his house to acquire a 3.3% stake in Britam.
His commitment to fostering local ownership didn’t stop with his personal investment; he also encouraged other Kenyans to invest in the company. This strategic move not only diversified the company’s ownership but also solidified its base in the Kenyan market. In recognition of his dedication and leadership qualities, he was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Britam in the same year. Over the years, his initial investment has burgeoned into a substantial personal stake valued at KSh1.7 billion (approximately US$19 million) as of February 2014.
Under Dr. Wairegi’s leadership, Britam has not only expanded geographically but has also grown its product offerings, demonstrating his vision of transforming a local insurance provider into a diversified pan-African financial powerhouse. His strategic acumen and commitment to growth have positioned Britam as a key player in the financial services sector across East and Southern Africa.
