Former President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, Kenya’s second head of state, ruled the country from 1978 to 2002. Known as the “Professor of Politics,” Moi not only shaped Kenya’s political history but also left behind a large family. He officially had eight children with his wife Lena Bomett Moi, but over the years, rumors of additional alleged children have persisted. The story of the Moi children reflects privilege, controversy, and Kenya’s dynastic politics.
Moi’s Marriage and Family
In 1950, Moi married Lena Bomett, daughter of Paul Bomett, a respected farmer and Christian leader from Eldama Ravine. The couple had five sons and three daughters, including twins. Lena, who had trained as a teacher, gave up her career to raise the children as Moi pursued politics.
However, the marriage broke down in the 1970s. Moi and Lena separated in 1974 and divorced quietly in 1979. Moi never remarried, while Lena lived a quiet life in Rongai until her death in 2004. Despite their separation, she was buried at Moi’s Kabarak home, symbolically restored to her place in the family.
The Legitimate Moi Children
1. Jennifer Chemutai Kositany (b. 1953)

Moi’s firstborn daughter. She studied at Kenya High School before moving to the US for further studies. Jennifer lived a private life but married into the famous Kositany family. Her husband, Stephen Kositany, brother of Soy MP Caleb Kositany, died in a road accident, leaving her widowed.
2. Jonathan Toroitich Moi (1955–2019)

Moi’s first son, Jonathan, became a household name as a rally driver in the 1980s and 1990s. Known for his adventurous spirit and charm, he was closer to his mother than to Moi. He succumbed to cancer in 2019, with tributes pouring in from across the country.
3. John Mark Moi (b. 1958)

Considered the most private of Moi’s sons, John Mark studied briefly in the United States before returning to Kenya. Unlike his siblings, he avoided the political limelight and lived a largely quiet life.
4. Raymond Moi (b. 1960)

Currently MP for Rongai, Raymond followed Moi into politics but never matched his father’s charisma. He has often been described as a unifying figure within the family, maintaining the Moi legacy in local politics.
5 & 6. Philip and Doris Moi (Twins, b. 1962)

- Philip Moi: A retired army major and polo enthusiast. His personal life has been controversial, especially a protracted divorce case against his estranged wife, Rosanna Pluda, involving claims of KES 90 million in maintenance.
- Doris Moi: Educated at Limuru Girls and later in Australia, Doris kept a lower profile. She sat on boards of schools linked to the Moi family. She was married to Ibrahim Choge, son of veteran politician Simon Choge, but was widowed after his tragic death in a road accident.
7. Gideon Moi (b. 1964)

The youngest son and Moi’s clear political heir, Gideon Moi became Baringo Senator and later chairman of KANU. Widely viewed as Moi’s favorite child, Gideon was groomed to carry the dynasty forward. His closeness to his father positioned him as the family spokesperson after Moi’s death.
8. June Moi (Adopted)

Moi’s adopted daughter, June, was also one of his favorites. She attended Kenya High School, studied in Canada, and later became a businesswoman. Like Gideon, she often appeared beside Moi in his final years.
Alleged Moi Children
In addition to the official siblings, speculation has long swirled around individuals rumored to be Moi’s children. Though never confirmed, the rumors have persisted in political and media circles.
Martin Kasavuli

Son of the late veteran broadcaster Catherine Kasavuli. Whispers claim that Martin’s father was Moi, though neither Catherine nor Moi ever confirmed it. Martin lived independently, away from the political spotlight.
Lee Kinyanjui

Former Nakuru Governor, whose measured political style sometimes drew comparisons to Moi. Though rumors linked him to the former president, Lee never confirmed any connection.
Rigathi Gachagua

Once alleged to be connected to Moi, Rigathi rose through government ranks as a District Officer under Moi’s regime before venturing into politics. He later became Kenya’s Deputy President under William Ruto but was impeached, a rare fall from grace in Kenyan politics. Though his political trajectory sometimes fueled speculation of Moi ties, there is no verifiable proof of paternity.
Legacy of the Moi Children
The Moi children lived diverse lives—some in politics, others in business or sports, and some deliberately private. Gideon Moi has emerged as the dynasty’s political face, while others like Jennifer and John Mark avoided public scrutiny. Controversies such as Philip’s divorce and the whispered existence of alleged children added layers of intrigue to the Moi family story.
Ultimately, Moi’s family reflects the contradictions of the man himself—deeply traditional yet politically cunning, private in some ways yet always under scrutiny. His children, legitimate and alleged, remain part of Kenya’s historical and political memory.
The former President Daniel Moi never remarried. Mama Lena retreated to a quiet life at her Kabimoi Farm where she passed on in July 2004. She was buried in Moi’s expansive farm in Kabarak. Moi visited her several times while ailing, and was with her hours before she passed on.
Moi’s father, Kimoi arap Chebii, died in 1928 when the former President was only four years old and little is known about his mother, Kabon, except that she died shortly after Moi was born.
