Michael Søren Madsen (September 25, 1957 – July 3, 2025) was an American actor known for his tough-guy screen presence and frequent collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino. Over a four-decade career, he appeared in more than 300 film and television productions, with notable roles in Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Madsen also gained recognition in mainstream films such as Free Willy, Donnie Brasco, Species, and Die Another Day.
Beyond film, he lent his voice to major video games including Grand Theft Auto III and the Dishonored series. Known for his deep voice, rugged demeanor, and memorable villains, Madsen became a cult figure in American cinema.
Early Life
Madsen was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Elaine, a filmmaker, and Calvin Madsen, a firefighter and World War II veteran. His mother pursued the arts with encouragement from critic Roger Ebert, while his sister, Virginia Madsen, became an Academy Award–nominated actress. Of Danish, Irish, and Native American descent, he grew up in Illinois before training at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where he apprenticed under John Malkovich.
Career
Madsen’s breakthrough came with Reservoir Dogs, where his portrayal of the sadistic Mr. Blonde cemented his tough-guy persona. Although originally considered for John Travolta’s role in Pulp Fiction, he continued working with Tarantino in Kill Bill: Volume 2, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Outside of Tarantino’s films, he appeared in diverse projects:
- Free Willy (1993) as foster father Glen Greenwood.
- Donnie Brasco (1997) alongside Johnny Depp and Al Pacino.

Personal Life
Madsen married three times and had six children, including actor Christian Madsen. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022, a tragedy that deeply affected him. Known for his troubled personal life, Madsen faced arrests in later years but denied divorce rumors before his death.
He also pursued entrepreneurial and creative ventures, including a line of hot sauces called American Badass and several published works of poetry.
Death
Madsen died of cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, California, on July 3, 2025, aged 67. His ashes were interred at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills. Tarantino hosted a private memorial for him at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles.
