How to Report Mpesa Fraudsters in Kenya: A Comprehensive Guide

M-PESA Shiriki Pay guide is becoming essential reading for many users as digital wallet sharing gains traction in Kenya. As mobile money continues to anchor daily transactions across the country, Safaricom has introduced Shiriki Pay to expand how M-PESA accounts can be used within trusted circles. The feature allows account holders to authorize specific individuals to spend directly from their M-PESA wallet within defined limits.

Shiriki Pay responds to a practical reality. Families, small businesses and close associates often share financial responsibilities. However, traditional M-PESA accounts are built around single user control. Through Shiriki Pay, Safaricom has created a structured way to extend limited wallet access while maintaining oversight and security.

Currently accessible through the *334# USSD code, Shiriki Pay enables account holders to add or remove users, set monthly spending limits and register a nominated beneficiary. Although Safaricom has indicated that the service will later integrate into the M-PESA and Safaricom apps, the USSD channel remains the primary gateway. This M-PESA Shiriki Pay guide outlines how to join the service, manage authorized users and register a beneficiary.

What Is Shiriki Pay and How It Works

Shiriki Pay allows an M-PESA account holder to authorize another person to make merchant payments directly from their wallet. Authorized users can pay through Lipa na M-PESA using Buy Goods, Paybill and Pochi la Biashara options.

Importantly, Shiriki Pay does not grant full wallet control. Withdrawals and peer-to-peer transfers remain restricted to the primary account holder. Therefore, the feature focuses on controlled merchant spending rather than unrestricted access.

Key Features of Shiriki Pay

  • Authorized users can pay merchants within a set monthly limit
  • The account holder defines and controls the spending ceiling
  • Cash withdrawals are not permitted by authorized users
  • The account holder can revoke access at any time

These safeguards aim to balance convenience with financial protection.

How to Join Shiriki Pay on M-PESA

Joining Shiriki Pay requires only a few steps through the *334# USSD menu.

Step-by-Step Guide to Opt In

  1. Dial *334# on your mobile phone
  2. Select option 14 – Shiriki Pay
  3. Choose Opt In
  4. Select option 5 – Add User
  5. Enter the phone number of the person you want to authorize
  6. Set the monthly spending limit
  7. Enter your M-PESA PIN to confirm

Once completed, you will receive a confirmation message. The authorized user will also receive a notification indicating they have been added to your Shiriki Pay account.

Because Shiriki Pay transactions operate within predefined limits, users can monitor shared spending without surrendering total account control.

How Authorized Users Spend with Shiriki Pay

After registration, authorized users can make merchant payments directly. They can pay for goods, services and business transactions using standard Lipa na M-PESA options.

However, certain restrictions remain in place.

Restrictions on Authorized Users

  • No cash withdrawals
  • No sending money to other individuals
  • Spending cannot exceed the account holder’s set monthly limit
  • Completed transactions cannot be reversed

These limitations reduce misuse risk and maintain financial accountability.

How to Register a Nominated Beneficiary on M-PESA

Beyond Shiriki Pay, M-PESA also allows users to register a nominated beneficiary. This ensures that a trusted individual can claim funds under defined circumstances.

Registering a nominated beneficiary enhances estate planning and financial continuity.

Steps to Add a Nominated Beneficiary

  1. Dial *334#
  2. Select option 98 – More
  3. Select option 12 – M-PESA Nominated Beneficiary
  4. Choose your occupation
  5. Select the purpose of your M-PESA account
  6. Select your source of funds
  7. Choose Register Nominated Beneficiary
  8. Enter the beneficiary’s first and last name
  9. Select the ID type
  10. Enter the ID number
  11. Enter the phone number
  12. Select your relationship to the beneficiary
  13. Confirm details
  14. Enter your M-PESA PIN

After completion, both parties receive confirmation messages. This registration ensures that M-PESA funds can be accessed appropriately if needed.

Managing and Removing Users from Shiriki Pay

Account holders retain full control over who remains authorized under Shiriki Pay. If circumstances change, users can be removed quickly.

How to Delete an Authorized User

  1. Dial *334#
  2. Select option 14 – Shiriki Pay
  3. Choose option 6 – Manage
  4. Select Delete User
  5. Confirm deletion
  6. Enter your M-PESA PIN

Both parties receive confirmation of removal. The deleted user immediately loses spending privileges.

How to Opt Out of Shiriki Pay

Users who no longer wish to use the service can exit entirely.

Steps to Leave Shiriki Pay

  1. Dial *334#
  2. Select option 14 – Shiriki Pay
  3. Choose Manage
  4. Select option 6 – Opt Out

Opting out removes all authorized users and disables shared wallet functionality.

Limitations and Safeguards in Shiriki Pay

Shiriki Pay incorporates protective restrictions designed to minimize fraud and unauthorized misuse.

Core Limitations

  • Spending cannot exceed the set limit
  • Cash withdrawals are prohibited
  • Peer-to-peer transfers remain restricted to the primary account holder
  • The account holder can revoke access anytime
  • Authorized users can stop using the service anytime

Additionally, Safaricom reserves the right to suspend or terminate access in cases involving suspected fraud, security risks, incomplete identity verification or legal compliance requirements.

These controls reinforce the structured design of Shiriki Pay. While the feature promotes shared financial convenience, it avoids unrestricted wallet delegation.

Why Shiriki Pay Matters for M-PESA Users

Mobile money in Kenya functions as a primary financial tool for millions. As households and small enterprises evolve, shared spending needs increase. Shiriki Pay addresses these needs by enabling controlled wallet sharing.

Rather than handing over a SIM card or sharing a PIN, account holders can now authorize spending securely within boundaries. This approach reduces risk while maintaining flexibility.

At the same time, registering a nominated beneficiary strengthens financial planning. It ensures that digital assets remain accessible within trusted circles if unforeseen circumstances arise.

Through structured access, spending limits and identity verification, Shiriki Pay expands the M-PESA ecosystem without compromising oversight. As digital payments deepen across Kenya, features like Shiriki Pay illustrate how mobile money platforms continue adapting to real world usage patterns.
