Career Beginnings in Investing
After the dotcom bubble burst in the early 2000s, Packer bought stakes in online classified sites SEEK and Carsales. He predicted that newspaper companies reliant on classified ads would struggle against online competitors focused on employment and vehicle listings. Packer’s strategy paid off, with his $33 million purchase of a 25% stake in SEEK yielding over $400 million in profit after six years. Australian Consolidated Press’s acquisition of a 41% stake in Carsales for $100 million later became worth $462 million.
Crown Resorts
One of Packer’s most significant ventures was Crown Resorts, an Australian gambling and entertainment company established in 2007.
