Part 1: Starting a New SketchUp File

Step 1: Access SketchUp

  1. Go to SketchUp: Open your web browser and go to SketchUp’s web application. Sign in with your Google account if prompted.

Step 2: Initialize Your Workspace

  1. Start a New File: After signing in, a new 3D model file opens with a default figure. This serves as a reference for scale.
  2. Delete Default Figure: Select the default figure by clicking and dragging a square around it, then press Delete.

Part 2: Navigating the 3D Workspace

Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with Navigation Tools

  1. Zoom Tool: Click the magnifying glass icon or use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.
  2. Rotate Tool: Click the icon with two arrows around a pole and drag left or right to rotate your view.
  3. Pan Tool: Click the hand icon and drag in any direction to pan across the workspace.

Part 3: Creating 2D Shapes

Step 1: Set Up Your View

  1. Select View Mode: Click the icon that looks like a director’s clapboard (Views button) in the toolbar to the right and select “Parallel Projection” for creating 2D shapes.

Step 2: Draw Basic Shapes

  1. Choose Shape Tool: Click the shape tool (rectangle, circle, polygon) in the toolbar to the left.
  2. Draw Shape: Click and drag in the workspace to create your desired shape.

Step 3: Use the Line Tool

  1. Select Line Tool: Click the pencil icon for straight lines or the squiggly line icon for freehand drawing.
  2. Create Custom Shapes: Click and drag to draw lines and create custom 2D shapes. Complete shapes by connecting lines to form a closed loop.

Part 4: Turning 2D Shapes into 3D Objects

Step 1: Change View Mode

  1. Switch to Perspective View: Click the “Perspective” cube in the Views menu.

Step 2: Use the Push/Pull Tool

  1. Select Push/Pull Tool: Click the icon with a square and an arrow pointing up.
  2. Extrude Shape: Click your 2D shape and drag up or down to extrude it into a 3D object.

Part 5: Moving, Rotating, and Scaling Objects

Step 1: Select Object

  1. Select Tool: Click the white arrow icon and drag a box around the object to select it.

Step 2: Move, Rotate, or Scale

  1. Move Tool: Click the four arrows icon and drag to move the object.
  2. Rotate Tool: Click the two circular arrows icon and drag to rotate the object.
  3. Scale Tool: Click the rectangle with an arrow icon and drag to scale the object.

Part 6: Applying Textures and Colors

Step 1: Open Materials Tab

  1. Materials Tab: Click the icon that looks like a cube with a square pattern in the toolbar to the right.

Step 2: Apply Material

  1. Select Material: Choose a material category and click a material.
  2. Apply to Object: Click the faces of the 3D object to apply the selected texture or color.

Part 7: Saving a Model

Step 1: Save Your Work

  1. Save Button: Click Save in the upper-left corner.
  2. Name Your File: Type a name for your model and select a folder (optional).
  3. Save Here: Click Save Here to save your model.
