How To Borrow Airtime On Telkom Kenya

Telkom Kenya offers a service similar to Safaricom’s Okoa Jahazi, named PEWA, which provides emergency airtime to its prepaid customers. By dialing *133# on their phone, Telkom users can access this feature. Introduced to ensure users remain connected to important contacts without airtime and when purchasing more isn’t immediately possible, PEWA is notably convenient for its on-call airtime request feature. This means if you’re on a call and notice your credit dwindling, you can pause the call, request PEWA airtime, and then resume the conversation.

Telkom PEWA Fees

For the convenience of borrowing airtime, Telkom applies a 10% service charge. For example, if you borrow KSh 50, you’ll actually receive KSh 45 to use.

Eligibility for Telkom PEWA Emergency Airtime

To be eligible for PEWA, you need to:

  1. Have had your Telkom line active for at least two months.
  2. Have used a minimum of KSh 50 in airtime during the previous month.
  3. Have a minimum of KSh 10 in your main account.

It’s important to note that the options for borrowing emergency airtime are KSh 20 and KSh 50.

Checking Your Telkom PEWA Balance

To find out your PEWA balance, simply dial *131# or send an SMS with the text ‘131’ to ‘131’.

PEWA Repayment Terms

The borrowed amount must be repaid within 7 days from the borrowing date. Failure to repay on time will result in a 14-day suspension of the PEWA service.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that any PEWA airtime you have is valid for use within 30 days.
