How to become a UDM member is a pertinent question for Kenyans seeking to align with a party that champions democratic governance, social justice, and citizen empowerment.
Brief History of the United Democratic Movement (UDM)
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is a Kenyan political party founded in 1999 by politicians who were considered to be renegades from the then ruling party, Kenya African National Union (KANU). The party was denied registration by the then head of state, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, leading most of its leaders to join other parties by the 2002 general elections. UDM allied itself with the Orange Democratic Movement in the 2007 general elections, supporting Raila Odinga’s presidential candidacy. In 2012, a faction attempted to take control of the party, but after resistance, they formed the United Republican Party. In 2022, UDM initially endorsed ODM chief Odinga but later shifted support to President-elect William Ruto, joining the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
The party’s headquarters are located at Hurlingham, Sunbeam Place, Ground Floor, along Tigoni Road, Nairobi, with a postal address of P.O. Box 44820-00100 Nairobi. ORPP
