What is a Subsequent HELB Loan?

A subsequent loan is simply the second, third, or fourth HELB loan that students apply for after receiving their first loan. It covers the remaining years of your course, whether you’re pursuing a degree, diploma, or certificate. If you’re already receiving HELB, this is the next step in your funding journey.

Can You Apply for a Subsequent Loan?

Before applying, ensure you meet these basic conditions:

  • You’re still registered at your college or university.
  • You received a previous HELB loan.
  • Your school is government-recognized.
  • You have maintained decent grades and are not failing your units.

If you meet all the criteria, you’re good to apply.

Three Ways to Apply for a Subsequent HELB Loan

Here are the three easiest ways to apply for a subsequent HELB loan:

Option 1: HELB Mobile App (Most Popular)

The HELB mobile app is the most convenient and widely used method for applying for a subsequent loan.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Download the HELB Mobile App:
    • Go to Google Play Store and search for HELB.
    • Download the official app.
  2. Set Up Your Account:
    • Use your phone number (must be registered under your name) to create a PIN.
  3. Fill in Your Details:
    • Enter your first name (as per your ID), ID number, and email address.
  4. Agree to the Terms:
    • Accept the app’s terms and conditions.
  5. Complete Financial Literacy Section:
    • Answer some basic questions about money management (this takes about 2 minutes).
  6. Select Your Loan Type:
    • For university students: Tap “Loans” → “Degree” → “Undergraduate Subsequent Loan”.
    • For TVET students: Tap “Certificate/Diploma” → “TVET Second and Subsequent Loan”.
  7. Verify Yourself:
    • Re-enter your phone number and ID number.
  8. Choose Your Payment Option:
    • Select either M-Pesa or Bank Transfer.
  9. Submit:
    • Click Submit and save the confirmation message with your loan serial number.

Pro Tip: Keep your confirmation SMS. It’s proof of your application.

*Option 2: USSD Code (642#) (For Basic Phones)

If you don’t have a smartphone, you can still apply using a basic phone via USSD.

Steps to Apply:

  1. *Dial 642# from your mobile phone.
  2. Log in with your PIN.
  3. Select Loan Application.
  4. Choose your level (Degree, Diploma, or Certificate).
  5. Select the academic year for the loan.
  6. Follow the prompts to complete your application.

Option 3: HEF Portal (For Desktop Users)

If you prefer using a laptop or desktop, you can apply via the HEF portal.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Visit the HEF Portal.
  2. Log in using your existing account credentials.
  3. Go to the Loan Application Tab and select Subsequent Loan Application.
  4. Fill in the required details and submit the application.

What You Need to Apply

Before you begin your application, make sure you have the following ready:

  • Phone number registered under your name.
  • National ID number.
  • Email address (ensure it’s an active one).
  • College details (institution name, course, etc.).
  • Bank account information or M-Pesa number for loan disbursement.

How You’ll Receive Your Money

Once your loan is approved, you can choose how to receive your funds:

  1. M-Pesa: The loan will be deposited directly into your M-Pesa account.
  2. Bank Account: The loan will be transferred to your registered bank account.
  3. Mobile Wallet: Funds can also be sent via M-Pesa Mini App.

Choose the method that works best for you.

Things to Know About the HELB Application Process

  • No physical forms needed: The process is entirely digital. You don’t need to print anything or submit physical forms. The confirmation SMS is all you need as proof of your application.
  • It’s completely free: Don’t pay anyone to apply for a HELB loan. If someone asks for money, it’s a scam—report them.
  • Phone number matters: Your phone number must be registered under your name. If it’s registered under someone else’s name, your application will not be processed.
  • Deadlines: Pay attention to the application opening dates. Missing the deadline means you’ll have to wait for the next application window.

After You Apply for a Subsequent HELB Loan

Once you’ve submitted your application:

  1. Save your confirmation SMS – it’s important.
  2. Check the status of your application by using the same method you applied with (HELB app, USSD, or HEF portal).
  3. Wait for HELB to notify you whether you’ve been approved for the loan.
  4. If you need help, contact HELB customer care at [email protected] or 0711 052 000.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • Can’t log into the app?
Ensure your phone number is registered under your name and you’re using the correct PIN.
  • USSD not working?
Try using the mobile app or the HEF portal instead.
  • App keeps crashing?
Contact HELB customer care for assistance.
  • Forgot your PIN?
Reset it via the app or by calling HELB customer service.

Why This Guide Helps You Apply for Subsequent HELB Loans

Applying for a subsequent HELB loan doesn’t have to be stressful. The process has been streamlined for students, and it’s much easier than your first application. With three different ways to apply (via the HELB app, USSD, or HEF portal), getting funding for your next academic year is just a few clicks away.

Ensure your phone number is properly registered under your name, have your details ready, and you’ll have your subsequent loan application completed in minutes.

Help your classmates by sharing this guide – it could save them hours of confusion and frustration. The more students who know about these easy methods, the fewer will fall for scams or miss application deadlines.
