Gulu University (GU) is a public university in Uganda, established by Act 7 of 2001, later amended by Act 3 of 2006. It commenced academic operations in September 2002. It is one of the nine government universities in Uganda and has become a center for training professionals in agriculture, medicine, business, education, law, science, and development studies.
The university is particularly notable for its role in post-conflict recovery and community transformation in Northern Uganda following decades of civil unrest.

Location and Campuses
As of 2016, GU operates three main campuses:
- Main Campus (Gulu): ~5 km northeast of Gulu city center, 333 km north of Kampala.
- Kitgum Campus: Established in 2011, ~104 km northeast of Gulu, near the South Sudan border.
- Hoima Campus: Established upon request from the Bunyoro Kingdom, offering agriculture, environment, IT, business, and education programs.
History & Progress
- 2002: First intake of students.
- 2010: First class of 40 medical doctors graduated from the School of Medicine, supported by the University of Naples Federico II (Italy).
- 2013: Staff capacity included 421 members (241 academic, 180 non-teaching).
- 2016: Lira University, formerly a GU constituent college (founded 2009), was elevated to full university status by Parliament.
- Growth: By 2014, GU had ~5,000 students, including both government and private-sponsored learners.
