Kyambogo University (KYU) is a public higher learning institution in Uganda and one of the country’s largest universities by student population. It was created in 2003 through the merger of three major institutions:
- Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK) – tracing its roots to 1928 as Kampala Technical School, later Uganda Technical College.
- Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK) – started as a government teacher training college in 1948, became a national teachers’ college in 1954, and later ITEK by Act of Parliament in 1989.
- Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE) – originally part of Makerere University’s Department of Special Education, became autonomous in 1998.
This merger positioned KYU as Uganda’s center of excellence in vocational training, teacher education, and special needs education, while also expanding into engineering, science, business, and social sciences.
