The match kicks off on June 20 at 23:00 EAT for fans in East Africa, which is 4 p.m. ET in Toronto. It is Match 33 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and one of the standout fixtures in the second round of group games.

Germany enter with confidence after a dominant 7-1 win over Curaçao. The result gave Julian Nagelsmann’s side three points, a major goal-difference advantage and the strongest start of any team in Group E.

Côte d’Ivoire also began with a victory, beating Ecuador 1-0 through a late Amad Diallo goal. That result gave the African champions a powerful platform and showed they can win tight tournament matches against disciplined opponents.

Now the two winners meet. A victory for either side would put them close to the round of 32 and give them control before the final group match.

Germany vs Côte d’Ivoire Match Details

Germany and Côte d’Ivoire meet at Toronto Stadium, the tournament name for BMO Field.

The match is important because both teams already have three points. Germany lead Group E on goal difference after their seven-goal display against Curaçao, while Côte d’Ivoire sit just behind after their narrow win over Ecuador.

The group also includes Ecuador and Curaçao, who both need to recover after opening defeats. That makes Germany vs Côte d’Ivoire a possible turning point. The winner could separate from the rest of the group and move into a commanding position.

Germany will arrive as the more established World Cup power, but Côte d’Ivoire have enough athleticism, pace and attacking quality to make this far more difficult than Germany’s opener.

Group E Table Before Kickoff

Germany are top of Group E with three points, seven goals scored and one conceded.

Côte d’Ivoire also have three points after scoring once and keeping a clean sheet against Ecuador. Ecuador and Curaçao remain without a point.

That gives this match a clear edge. Germany can strengthen their lead with another win and possibly secure qualification early. Côte d’Ivoire can move ahead of Germany and send a major statement to the rest of the tournament.

A draw would keep both teams in strong positions, but it would also leave work to do in the final group match. With the expanded 48-team format, four points may be useful, but six points would bring much greater comfort.

Germany Aim to Prove Opener Was No One-Off

Germany’s 7-1 win over Curaçao was emphatic, but the next test is very different.

Curaçao were making their World Cup debut and struggled to contain Germany’s movement, pressing and finishing. Côte d’Ivoire will offer more pace, more physical pressure and more counterattacking threat.

That means Germany need to show control, not just attacking flair. The key will be how well they manage transitions when Côte d’Ivoire break forward.

Joshua Kimmich has already warned that Germany will learn more about themselves across the full group stage. This match should provide a clearer measure of their level.

Germany will likely look to dominate possession, create overloads in wide areas and use quick combinations around the box. Their challenge will be staying patient if Côte d’Ivoire defend deep and compact.

Côte d’Ivoire Bring Pace and Belief

Côte d’Ivoire’s win over Ecuador was narrow but important.

Amad Diallo’s late goal gave them three points and showed their ability to keep pushing until the final whistle. The clean sheet was just as important because it proved they can defend under tournament pressure.

Against Germany, Côte d’Ivoire may not control possession for long spells. Their best route could come through compact defending, fast transitions and direct running into space.

They have the athletic profile to trouble Germany if they win the ball in midfield. Their attackers can stretch the pitch, force defenders to turn and create danger from wide areas.

The main challenge will be discipline. Germany are dangerous when opponents lose shape, and Côte d’Ivoire cannot afford cheap turnovers near their own box.

Key Battle: Germany’s Control vs Ivorian Transitions

This match may be decided by the space behind Germany’s midfield.

Germany will likely push numbers forward and try to control the tempo. That can overwhelm opponents, but it can also leave gaps if the ball is lost.

Côte d’Ivoire will look for those moments. Quick passes into wide areas, early balls behind the defense and strong running through midfield could give them chances.

Germany must counter-press quickly and stop attacks before they develop. Côte d’Ivoire must be accurate when chances to break appear.

The first goal will matter. If Germany score early, they can control the match and force Côte d’Ivoire to open up. If Côte d’Ivoire score first, Germany may face their first real stress test of the tournament.

Set Pieces Could Shape the Match

Set pieces could become a major factor in Toronto.

Germany have height, delivery and players who attack the box well. Côte d’Ivoire also have physical strength and can threaten from corners and free kicks.

In a match between two teams already on three points, small details may decide the result. A poorly defended corner, a soft foul near the penalty area or a missed marking assignment could change the group.

Both teams must stay disciplined. Germany cannot allow Côte d’Ivoire easy counterattacking fouls to break pressure. Côte d’Ivoire cannot give Germany repeated dead-ball chances around the box.

What Germany Need

Germany need tempo, balance and defensive concentration.

They should have enough possession to control large parts of the match, but the performance cannot become careless. A 7-1 opening win can create confidence, but it can also create overconfidence.

The midfield must protect the back line, especially when fullbacks advance. Germany’s forwards also need to press after losing the ball, because Côte d’Ivoire can attack quickly if given space.

If Germany combine patience with sharp finishing, they can take control of Group E.

What Côte d’Ivoire Need

Côte d’Ivoire need belief without recklessness.

They should not sit too deep for the entire match, because Germany can eventually break down passive defending. Instead, they need to choose the right moments to press, counter and push runners forward.

Amad Diallo’s confidence after scoring against Ecuador could be important. Côte d’Ivoire will need players who can carry the ball under pressure and make the most of limited attacking moments.

A draw would still be useful, but a win would transform their tournament.

Prediction and What to Watch

Germany enter as favorites because of their opening performance, depth and tournament pedigree. Côte d’Ivoire, however, are dangerous enough to make this Germany’s first serious challenge of the World Cup.

This should be more competitive than Germany’s opener. Côte d’Ivoire have the speed and structure to create problems, but Germany’s attacking quality may still prove decisive.

Prediction: Germany 2-1 Côte d’Ivoire.

A Germany win would put them in control of Group E and close to qualification. A Côte d’Ivoire win would be one of the strongest statements of the group stage and confirm them as a serious knockout threat.

For Germany vs Côte d’Ivoire, the stakes are clear: two winners meet in Toronto, but only one can take full command of Group E.
