1. Gather All Necessary Documents:

  • P9 Forms: Obtain P9 forms from each employer for the relevant tax year. Filing tax returns with multiple P9 forms
  • Personal Information: Ensure you have your Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN and iTax portal login credentials.

2. Access the iTax Portal:

  • Visit the iTax portal and log in using your KRA PIN and password.

3. Download the Income Tax Resident Individual Form:

  • Navigate to the ‘Returns’ menu and select ‘File Return.’
  • Choose ‘Income Tax Resident Individual’ as the tax obligation.
  • Download the Excel-based return form provided.

4. Enable Macros in the Excel Form:

  • Open the downloaded Excel form and enable macros to allow full functionality.

5. Fill in the Return Information:

  • Section A, Part 1: Enter your personal details, including your KRA PIN and the return period.

6. Enter Employment Income Details:

  • Section F: For each employer, input:
    • Employer’s PIN and name.
    • Gross pay, allowances, and benefits as per each P9 form.
    • Ensure all income sources are accurately reported.

7. Input PAYE Details:

    • Taxable salary.
    • Tax payable on the taxable salary.
    • PAYE deducted, as indicated on each P9 form.

8. Complete Tax Computation:

  • Section T: Enter any applicable reliefs, such as:

    • Pension contributions.

9. Validate the Form:

  • After completing all sections, click the ‘Validate’ button to check for errors.
  • Address any validation issues as prompted.

10. Upload and Submit the Return:

  • Log back into the iTax portal.
  • Navigate to ‘Returns’ > ‘File Return.’
  • Upload the validated Excel form.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions, then submit.

11. Download the Acknowledgment Receipt:

  • After submission, download the e-Return Acknowledgment Receipt for your records.

  • Accuracy: Ensure all figures match those on your P9 forms to avoid discrepancies.
  • Timeliness: File your returns before the June 30th deadline to avoid penalties.
