Education Background

Ambwere did not receive any formal education due to financial constraints. Later in life, realizing the need to read and write for his business, he hired a tutor, Lawrence Kisame, in the 1970s. After four years of learning, Ambwere could read, write, and communicate in English, and he rewarded Kisame with a house for his efforts.

Career Journey

At the age of ten, Ambwere followed older men to work in pyrethrum farms in Molo, Nakuru County. Finding the work unsuitable due to allergies, he switched jobs and began working for an Asian mason as a sweeper, eventually learning masonry skills.

In 1963, Ambwere secured his first major contract with Kaimosi Hospital to make beds. When the hospital couldn’t pay him, they gave him an old ambulance, which he used to transport wood to his carpentry shop. Over the next five years, he built his own shop and expanded his business.

Ambwere’s business ventures grew, leading him to invest in real estate and construction. His properties spread across various towns in Kenya, including Kitale, Mbale, Kakamega, Kisumu, and Nairobi.

Personal Life

Ambwere’s personal life has been turbulent, marked by divorces and family disputes. His first wife, Zipporah, and his subsequent marriages ended in separation. He claims that his ex-wives colluded with their children to swindle his money. Ambwere found peace with his current wife, Ebby Ingado, whom he married in 1994.

Ambwere has also battled diabetes, which led to a three-year hospitalization from 1989 to 1992, causing significant setbacks in his business. Despite these challenges, he rebuilt his empire with resilience and determination.

Major Achievements and Philanthropy

In the early 1980s, Ambwere made headlines by offering to pay teachers’ delayed salaries amounting to Ksh 48 million. This act of philanthropy brought him national attention and scrutiny from government officials, causing him significant stress.

Ambwere’s contributions to education and infrastructure are noteworthy. One of his prominent buildings, Chavakali Hardware, was commissioned by former President Mwai Kibaki. He has also interacted with former President Daniel Moi.

Despite his immense wealth, Ambwere remains a private individual, rarely appearing in public and maintaining a low profile.

Legacy and Future Plans

At 88, Ebrahim Ambwere continues to expand his business empire. He is currently building a mall in Kitale, which he hopes will make a significant impact. His children assist him in integrating technology into his businesses, ensuring continued growth and adaptation to modern trends.

While some locals criticize him for not helping the underprivileged, Ambwere insists that he assists those who genuinely need help and avoids being taken advantage of.

Ambwere’s life story is a testament to overcoming adversity through hard work, resilience, and strategic investments. His legacy as a self-made billionaire and philanthropist is set to inspire future generations.
