Melkzadek Opwotsi Ongong’a (1932–2024) was a pioneering Kenyan entrepreneur and co-founder of Moss Carpentry and Building Construction, a company that played a significant role in shaping Kenya’s construction sector. Together with his late business partner, Sheldon Saunya Sangolo of Mumbita, Emuhaya, Ongong’a helped build not only physical infrastructure but also human capacity, training numerous interns who would go on to become successful independent contractors.

His early life was marked by hardship, especially after the death of his father in 1941, when he was just 9 years old. Despite financial challenges and limited access to formal education, Ongong’a developed a keen interest in carpentry and construction. His passion and craftsmanship eventually led to the co-founding of Moss Carpentry and Building Construction, headquartered at Wekhomo Market, where it operated from a godown workshop. Under his leadership, the company grew into a respected construction firm, known for its reliability, quality, and hands-on training approach.
Moss Carpentry specialized in residential and commercial construction, and it gained national recognition for training interns who later became industry leaders. The firm’s contributions have spanned across the country, helping uplift living standards and providing employment.
Philanthropy and Community Impact
Beyond business, Ongong’a was deeply committed to community development. He supported and supervised the construction of local institutions such as:
- Emusenjeli Nursery School (later converted into a health centre)
- Emusenjeli Church of God
- Emusenjeli Primary School
- Iboona Church of God
He also served as the Board of Governors Chairman for Essong’olo Secondary School, playing a pivotal role in its development and rise to prominence. His leadership and generosity left a lasting mark on educational and religious institutions within Vihiga County.
Personal Life
Melkzadek Opwotsi Ongong’a was married to Josphine Atito Opwotsi, and together they raised ten children. Despite his professional accomplishments, he remained grounded and closely connected to his roots in Ebuchitwa Village.
