If you’ve decided to delete your ChatGPT account, it’s important to understand that this action is permanent and cannot be undone. Deleting your account will remove your access to OpenAI services, including ChatGPT, the API, and DALL·E. Additionally, your data will be deleted within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
Option 1: Delete Account via ChatGPT Web Interface
- Sign In:
Log in to your ChatGPT account. - Access Settings:
Click on your profile icon in the top right corner and select Settings. - Navigate to Data Controls:
In the Settings menu, click on Data Controls. - Initiate Account Deletion:
Under the Delete account section, click Delete. - Confirm Deletion:
A confirmation screen will appear. Enter your account email followed by the word “DELETE” (e.g.,[email protected]) to unlock the Permanently delete my account button. - Finalize Deletion:
Click the Permanently delete my account button to complete the process.
Note: You must be logged in within the last 10 minutes to access the deletion option.
Option 2: Delete Account via OpenAI Privacy Portal
- Access Privacy Portal:
Visit the OpenAI Privacy Portal. - Submit Deletion Request:
Click on Make a Privacy Request in the top right corner. - Choose Deletion Method:
Select Email Address if you have access to the email associated with your ChatGPT account. If you no longer have access to your email, choose Phone Number. - Enter Contact Information:
Provide an email address you can access. OpenAI will send a verification email to this address. - Verify and Confirm:
Follow the instructions in the verification email, then enter both your email and phone number associated with your OpenAI account. - Complete Deletion:
After verification, you’ll receive an SMS with a link to the Privacy Portal. Follow the link to submit your account deletion request.
Important Considerations Before Deleting Your Account
- Irrecoverable Action: Once your account is deleted, it cannot be recovered.
- Data Retention: Deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless they have been de-identified or OpenAI is required to retain them for legal reasons.
- Subscription Cancellation: Deleting your account should cancel any active subscriptions. However, if you signed up via mobile apps, you may need to cancel your subscription through the respective app store.
- Reusing Email Address: You can create a new account using the same email address after 30 days.
- Phone Number Limitations: A phone number can only be used for phone verification up to three times across all OpenAI accounts.
